More Cells 🍯 Longer Write Up ✍️ Made in 1998 Puma Cell Venom Alien 👽 On January 15, 1997, the sneaker world changed forever. Nike’s exclusive 17-year legal monopoly on Frank Rudy’s foundational “Air” patents officially expired.Suddenly, any brand on earth was legally free to put gas-filled bubbles into a midsole.Did Nike panic? Not even a little. Nike executives confidently viewed the patent cliff as a trap for their rivals. Years prior, Nike had quietly bought up Tetra Plastics—the world’s leading manufacturer of TPU film—completely locking down the supply chain. Plus, Nike knew their brand was a pop-culture juggernaut. As their PR team bluntly put it at the time: “If a competitor goes into basic air cushioning, they will be 17 years behind us.” So what did the cats(see what I did there) at Puma do? Instead of copying Nike, Puma executed a brilliant tactical pivot in early 1998 with Puma CELL. Rather than chasing pressurized gas bubbles that could puncture and deflate, Puma looked to nature. The honeycomb. They engineered blow-molded TPU hexagons into a rigid, mechanical honeycomb structure. The pitch? It was indestructible, offered elite stability, and literally could not pop. Puma paired this tech with an aggressive, industrial cyberpunk look, unique criss-cross lacing, and neon pods. This bulky, futuristic, alien look caught on and gave us these gems and more… Nike didn’t fear the competition, but Puma didn’t care. 🐆 #PumaCell #Puma #NikeAir #SneakerHistory #MyPumaArchive

Everyone who has followed for awhile knows I can’t go too long with out re-sharing my 1990’s Puma Cell collection. With the recent realization that I may be able bid on some pairs in upcoming eBay auctions I figured this may be the time to bring a few out again… 1998 Puma Cell Temptation For many there is something nostalgic about the era of AIR and Viz-tech. Because Nike legally owned the exclusive rights to use pressurized air/gas bladders inside sneaker midsoles, competitors were strictly blocked from copying the design. This is why other footwear brands had to engineer around Nike’s patents in the late 1980s and 1990s. Reebok created Hexalite. Puma the Trinomic . Nike’s original, foundational “Air” patents legally expired in 1997. This coincidentally (maybe/maybe not) coincided the timeline of Puma shifting to the CELL and other brands exploring visible cushioning. Enter 1998… #Puma #PumaCell #AirMax #NikeAir #MyPumaArchive
