In the weeks leading up to our virtual Annual General Meeting on October 29, CIMA will be sharing the Board of Directors nominees for the 2026-2029 term. Make sure to submit your ballots as soon as possible!   If you’re a CIMA member and you did not receive your ballot or your invite to the AGM, please contact sid@cimamusic.ca. Click the link in our bio for the full list of nominees.   Michelle Esdaille CEO – The Hook & Company Committee Participation: Equity Committee, Membership Affairs Committee Over the past two years as an Associate Board Member with CIMA, I’ve had the opportunity to better understand the organization’s work, contribute to industry conversations, and see firsthand the importance of strong advocacy and representation for Canada’s independent music sector. I’m interested in moving into an official Board role because I believe I can bring meaningful perspective, experience and value to that work. Through The HOOK & Company, my work spans sync licensing, artist and creator development, music industry education, business development and creating pathways to opportunity for independent and underrepresented creators. These areas align closely with CIMA’s focus on strengthening Canada’s independent music sector and supporting the businesses and people working within it. I see an opportunity to bring the perspective of an independent music business owner who works across multiple parts of the ecosystem, while continuing to learn from and contribute alongside the other leaders at CIMA. After two years of involvement, I have a stronger understanding of where my experience can be useful, and I’m ready to take on a greater level of responsibility and contribute more actively to the organization’s governance, advocacy and continued growth.

Thank you to @cmincubator (Canadian Music Incubator) for hosting our graduation ceremony and giving these creators a real platform to be seen. This is what happens when people come together to build something real. More to come. 🙏 📸: @dae.snaps

Tech has been used to help make music but are you using your music to help tech reach audiences? Oh the places you hear music but rarely think to consider that your music fits OR more importantly that you could build catalog solely for these areas or markets. Did you know Pepsi owns Quaker Oats? I say that because Pepsi doesn't appeal to the breakfast crowd like it does lunch or dinner but found a way to have a product in it's "catalog" that it could cover the area it knew Pepsi couldn't do alone. This is a great example of building catalog for something other than your audience while still being you and sustainably doing what you love in new creative ways. Check out @thehookscl for workshops and development that cater to outside the box skill development. Think sync licensing, sound design and music production for video games, commercials and trailers. It's time there is finally a space that focuses of how to creatively live sustainbable all at Sustainable Creative Living! 🎯

Not every opportunity shows its value upfront. 🗣️ Michelle, from @thehooksyncgroup shares a moment where a sync placement didn’t look worth it at first. The upfront fee was low, and it could’ve easily been passed on. But after digging deeper into where the music would live and what the long term royalties could look like, the opportunity told a different story. She trusted the research, made the pitch, and it turned into a lucrative placement. In sync, the real value isn’t always in the initial cheque. It’s in the lifespan of the record. Do your research. Understand the full picture. Move with intention, not assumptions. Season 2 Part 1 is out now 🎬 Watch Now & collect all the gems only on YouTube!!! Link in bio!
