Sloppy language keeps poor models alive and old nocebic narratives going on longer than they should. Say what’s actually happening. 🤓

🚫 “Lactic acid buildup” → ✅ Lactate + DOMS. That post-workout soreness isn’t an acid problem — it’s delayed onset muscle soreness from microtrauma and inflammation. Lactate cleared hours ago; it’s fuel, not the villain.

🚫 “Adhesions” → ✅ Densification. Fascia doesn’t glue itself together — hyaluronan changes viscosity and reduces glide between layers. Different mechanism, different treatment logic.

🚫 “Toxins” → ✅ Metabolic byproducts & red blood cells. Cupping marks aren’t detox — they’re extravasated red blood cells and normal metabolic waste your liver and kidneys already handle.

Thinking of skills in medicine as tools in a toolbox is a flawed approach for several reasons:

Complexity and Integration ⚙️🔧
 - Medical practice involves integrating a wide range of knowledge, skills, and experiences in a dynamic and context-sensitive manner. Unlike tools in a toolbox, which are typically used in a straightforward and predictable way, medical skills often need to be applied creatively and flexibly. Each patient presents a unique set of circumstances, requiring a nuanced and holistic approach rather than a simple application of isolated skills.

Patient-Centered Care 🏥❤️
 - A toolbox approach implies a mechanical, task-oriented process, which can undermine the importance of patient-centered care. Medicine is not just about fixing problems but understanding the patient’s needs, preferences, and values. This requires empathy, communication, and the ability to build relationships, which are not easily likened to tools.

 Continuous Learning and Adaptation 📚🔄
 - Medical knowledge and practices are constantly evolving. Professionals must engage in lifelong learning and adapt to new information and technologies. The static nature of a toolbox does not capture this dynamic process of continuous improvement and adaptation required in medicine.

 Critical Thinking and Judgment 🧠⚖️
 - The practice of medicine relies heavily on critical thinking, clinical judgment, and decision-making under uncertainty. These cognitive processes are not easily compared to the straightforward use of tools. They require deep understanding, reasoning, and often intuition, which goes beyond the simplistic notion of selecting the right tool for a task.

In summary, the toolbox metaphor fails to capture the complexity, integration, and humanistic aspects of medical practice. It oversimplifies the multifaceted and dynamic nature of medicine, which requires not just technical skills, but also critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, and continuous learning.

Manual therapy is one small aspect of our profession and what we do and for the above reasons outlined, thinking of just adding new techniques all the time to add tools is a flawed approach.
