New pod: 🎧 “BRAZILIANS WILL HEAD to the polls on Sunday in one of the most consequential presidential elections of the last decade. The run-off election will determine the future of the largest democracy in Latin America and the fate of the Amazon rainforest.

Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is facing off against Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro is currently on house arrest for his role in a failed 2023 military coup that intended to assassinate Lula, his vice president, and a Supreme Court justice. Despite his father’s attempted coup, Flavio Bolsonaro is currently the frontrunner, after coming out slightly ahead in the first round of voting.

“If they don’t win this election, then not only is Jair going to stay in jail, most likely, but Eduardo, Flávio’s brother and Jair’s son, who is in self-exile in the U.S., he has a multiyear prison sentence for his actions in the U.S. lobbying against Brazil’s foreign interests. He’s not going to be able to go home if they lose this election,” says Andrew Fishman, a Rio de Janeiro-based investigative journalist. “So they’re really just willing to do whatever they can to make sure that they win because this is their only get-out-of-jail-free card.”

Sound familiar? This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Jessica Washington speaks with Fishman, president and co-founder of The Intercept Brasil, about what’s at stake for Brazil and the planet in Sunday’s election.”

The Brazil election is this Sunday, and your country will feel it.

On October 25, Brazilians choose between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, son of the former president who was sentenced to 27 years for plotting a coup. The polls show a statistical tie.

If you're not Brazilian, swipe to see five ways this vote reaches you: Trump's plans for Latin America, the rare earths inside your phone, the Amazon and the climate, Big Tech's power over elections, and a far-right playbook that travels from country to country.

If you live in Brazil, this one is for you too. You came for the beaches, the music and the people. This week those people need you to say something, even if your feed is usually sunsets and caipirinhas.

Every claim has a source on the last slide, and the links are in the pinned comment. Check them, then send this to one friend abroad before Sunday.

Where are you reading this from? Tell me your country in the comments.
