You held my hand all week, sober, through the streets of Lahaina, the sun burning my shoulders and my neck where my hair is short from when I shaved it last fall. We stand in the kitchen, drunk on cheap wine coolers consumed on the beach where our fingers entwined, sand stuck to the soles of our wet feet. I reach on my tiptoes, draw your head down to mine, but instead of your lips touching mine, you hold a hand against my red shoulder and push me back. A bottle rocket explodes outside, sharp and clear as your answer.—"Fourth of July" by @theirishmonths who has published work in swamp pink, Chapter House, HAD and Best Small Fictions 2025. Her debut short story collection "All and Then None of You" is out now from Cowboy Jamboree Press. She is a reader/editor for Roi Fainéant Press and EIC of the Broken Hearts Gallery Literary. "Fourth of July" is the Editor's Pick for our STING contest, part of our 2026 Micromemoir Marathon. #sting #fourthofjuly #holdinghands #sober #lahaina #winecoolers #beach #hand #push #bottleocket #micromemoir

Books to read on International Women’s Day 📖 Today we’re celebrating the powerful voices of women authors whose work explores history, culture, and the stories that deserve to be told. We’re grateful to publish writers who challenge, inspire, and document the world around them. If a title here sparks your curiosity, consider adding it to your bookshelf. Supporting women authors helps keep these stories alive. #InternationalWomensDay #BooksByWomen #WomenWhoWrite #indiepublishing #bookstagram

We’re hanging out with our friends at @scrawlplace during AWP to host a reading & hang out on Friday, March 6th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM with a whole gaggle of Scrawl Place and HOOT Review authors. Located at @mri.studios, there will be stocked bar and plenty of friends. We’ll have a break between the readings to hang out, as well as at the event early, starting at 5:00 PM, if you wanna meet up. It wouldn’t be right to share this post in a silo without acknowledging that everything feels infuriating, chaotic, and frightening. Both HOOT and Scrawl Place are here to share community with you and provide a space to share literature, share resources, and build support networks. Hosted by: Andy Brown and Jane-Rebecca Cannarella A green promo flyer with a digitized map in the background and announcing the readers for an event on March 6th and the first group of readers. A black and white global is to the right of the readers: Annie Marhefka Katie Manning Meg Eden Kuyatt Christina Rosso Shannon Frost Greenstein Melissa Llanes Brownlee

Good #bookmail & 💌 in gen. Couldn’t find Gaga Harley but Lady meat dress is close enough. 🥩❣️I’m in this book and my story involves more conventional sweet treats: chocolate mushrooms and á gumdrop plush. Mixing makes them and the season come alive. #transgressivefiction #littlemonster

Mugshot #303: MELISSA FLORES ANDERSON “Night of the Living Tonstad” Ikea wasn’t part of my weekend plan, but my husband wanted to go. The parking lot was half empty when we arrived, unusual for a Saturday. Fluorescent lights cast a white pall on everyone in the bright yellow polos. Customers lumbered forward along the maze of faux rooms. My husband bumped into a man with gray hair. The man groaned and swiped at him. “Watch it, buddy,” my husband said. “I didn’t mean any harm.” The man lunged at my husband. I noticed the vacant look in his eyes. Like he was on autopilot. I looked around at the other people near us, all with the same pale skin and empty eyes. Those in close proximity pivoted toward us, moving in our direction. “Run,” I yelled, glad I had the foresight to wear sneakers. “Zombies. Or whatever the Swedish word is for that.” We ducked into the food court, through the kitchen and into a chilled pantry full of frozen meatballs. Not what I would have picked for a last meal. We’re barricaded in now by birch planks from the Tonstad organizer. If the Zombies move onto the Costco down the block, we can try to make our escape. And next time my husband asks to go to Ikea, he’s on his own. *** Melissa Flores Anderson has published work in swamp pink, Chapter House and HAD, and has a flash forthcoming in Best Small Fictions 2025. Her debut short story collection “All and Then None of You” is out now from Cowboy Jamboree Press. She is a reader/editor for Roi Fainéant Press and EIC of the Broken Hearts Gallery Literary. @theirishmonths (IG) @melissacuisine (Bluesky and X)
