66 years ago, the current American flag was adopted after Hawaii became the 50th state. The flag was designed by Robert G. Heft, a 17 year old high school student from Lancaster, Ohio and was created in 1958 as a class history project. Working at his grandparents’ kitchen table, he spent more than twelve hours on the project. He bought loads of blue cloth and white iron-on material, cut out one hundred stars by hand, fifty for each side, and arranged them in the alternating rows of five and six. Then he stitched the whole thing together on his grandmother’s sewing machine. His teacher originally gave him a B- on the project, but offered to change it to an A if Heft could get his design officially adopted in Washington. Heft’s design was later selected from among 1,500 submissions by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. On July 4, 1960, the 50 star flag became official. It has flown ever since, the longest serving version of the American Flag in the nation’s history. 🇺🇸
