Elton John wrote it as the signature song for Madman Across the Water, and a generation fell in love with it all over again on the tour bus in Almost Famous. Al’s arrangement transforms the original feel into a jazz waltz, reimagining this rock ballad in a jazz context.

Among the distinctive additions - Corcoran Holt’s bass solo, featured in today’s clip.

Tiny Dancer is one of several contemporary pop songs we’ve tackled for our Crazy World album.

For your GRAMMY® consideration:
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

My new album, Messages, is coming out tomorrow October 16, on the Neuma label (CD & digital).

Here is a pre-release review in Jazz Weekly by George W. Harris

Using simply a laptop and tons of imagination, Neil Rolnick creates an album of sonic samples that get stretched, pulled intertwined and released in quite creative and diverse ways. Taking simple words like “measuring” or “falling apart”, Rolnick purees them into a mosaic of ideas on “sO mANy mE’s”, while “MONO Prelude” combines sitarish noodles with something from pop rocker Joe Jackson. “WakeUp” feels like a Supertramp song taken into outer space, while “Gate Beats” mix bebopping robots forming dots and dashes. Something from Wendy Carlos meeting at the crossroads takes place on “A Robert Johnson Sampler”, and something whipping the rowing team in Ben-Hur goes into ramming speed on “Balkanization”. The next generation from the wave of Brian Eno comes to explore new lands

Today we’re sharing our exploration of Nature and Human Expression from our Best Traditional Pop Vocal album entry, Crazy World.

After the rising tension of “PrAilude,” we answer with “Double Rainbow,” a reminder of what is at stake, not just for our planet but for our ability to create and convey human emotion through song.

The extended coda was recorded completely without form. Like the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy’s life flies past her window, melodies and musical touchstones surface and recede as Al and Stacey quote the music that shaped them, while Tain’s drums drive the storm forward.

Can you pick out some of the melodies and motifs that came through?

This track “Double Rainbow” has also been entered for your GRAMMY® consideration in:

Best Jazz Performance

From @thejazzweekly

“There are just some combos that were destined together, and the tenor sax and Hammond B3 is one of the keepers.

But it has to be done right, as you’ve got to know what to so und like.
This is no problem for tenor man @dougwebbjazz who sounded like he took his Lester Young/Ben Webster/Sonny Rollins pills for this session, and B3er @pinchbrian plays like he’s bear hugging Jimmy Smith’s Leslies while @davidsikula /g and @john.lee.jazz /dr complete the perfect 3D picture.”

Out in its entirety on 9/25 on all DSPs and on out @bandcamp page!

In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to interview the legend Sonny Rollins on my podcast. Sonny just passed away at the age of 95.

His music tells his story better than anything ever could, but after spending the better part of an hour with him, a few things really stayed with me. Despite being one of the greatest musicians alive, he was amazingly humble. He was thoughtful with every word, honest, didn’t pull any punches, and was also really funny in his own way.

I’m so grateful to have had that moment with him. I listened back to the full interview this morning, and it brought me right back to how much there was to learn from him.

I also found myself thinking this morning about how he famously practiced for hours on the Williamsburg Bridge — a bridge I cross daily on foot and by bike.

RIP legend. Thank you for the music and inspiration.

Full interview link in my stories.
