A few months ago, @thejohnscott3 helped bring one of my creative visions to life. Magical doesn’t begin to describe our work together.

I sat on this idea for years, waiting for the right time to open up, which is why you’re reading this right now.

In 2022, I experienced a psychotic break that redirected the course of my life. My stress-induced psychosis was inevitable, honestly, and had been building for years. I saw that the life I had been living was not meant for me.

It forced me to face years of pain I had shoved down just to survive. A lifetime of misunderstood disability and gaslighting due to my undiagnosed Ehlers Danlos syndrome. Harm from people I loved and trusted deeply. Experiencing a world that hated queer people. Undiagnosed cPTSD that haunted me constantly and had been since I was a child. An overwhelming sense of shame so big it swallowed me whole. Accepting these things meant leaving my old life behind, disappointing people who had made up their mind about who I was, and being brave enough to live for me.

Anytime someone said “look at the bright side”, I wanted to scream. Sure, I’m an optimist; but healing without an acceptance of pain is not healing at all. It’s avoidance. The things that traumatized me should not have happened. Even for the events that were unavoidable, I needed actual support. Hearing “everything happens for a reason” didn’t help me get out of bed, leave the house, or actually live my life again.

But art did. Moving to Boston and starting comedy made me feel excited to be alive again. Being creative gives me a reason to heal and get stronger every single day. Diving into standup comedy, and music, and drag, has allowed me to find chosen family, define my own truth, and realize that my experiences aren’t that isolated. If you’re reading this, you’re a part of this chosen family. I love you.

So @ladygaga said it best. I thought about her “Marry The Night” video when I was in the emergency room in 2022. It’s still imprinted in my mind from the first time I saw it, and her prelude inspired the shoot John and I did together. Your darkness makes you beautiful too. Xoxo. 💌
