2018 is my first military service-free year since 2008. ⁣
⁣
Over the years, I worked tirelessly to change the system from within. While deployed to Southwest Asia, I was responsible for transferring the bodies of dead servicemembers back to the United States. This duty came with feelings of pride, guilt, and anger. There is an indescribable pride in honoring fallen members while carrying their caskets and re-icing their bodies as we waited for aircrafts. That pride, however, came with deep guilt for continuing to live my life as they continued to die. Anger, too, roared though me. Anger towards pro-war supporters and policies. Attending anti-war rallies, listening to veterans express similar pain, and joining veterans for peace initiatives helped me work through those emotions. While serving, I also worked with the initiative around responding to sexual assault and sexual harassment. And I tried so hard to be part of an entire culture shift. Even after my role as a victim advocate in the military ended, I continued to work for change as a military sexual assault/trauma teaching consultant. On the civilian side, I worked with homeless and jobless veterans on self-care and goal setting. ⁣
⁣
Despite some of the challenges, my experience in the Air Force was filled with professional development, training opportunities, friendships, travel, and lots of laughter. As I think back to the kick-ass ways my supervisors and colleagues uplifted each other and guided one another to be better in their military, civilian, and personal lives, I’m grateful. ⁣
⁣
By supporting veterans today, I don’t support the military industrial complex, pro-war agendas, military sexual violence, the occupation of the U.S. armed forces, and the exclusion of transgendered individuals from serving. I support my fellow servicemembers whom I appreciate unequivocally. Thank you to all the vets in my life—special shout out to my forever #wingwoman @angie.krep for always supporting me and caring for others (she’s rucking against veteran suicide today #ruck4vets). Your sacrifices, efforts, and hard work are appreciated! ⁣

Words on the passing of Phife Dawg.

Today, I feel the need to say something about the untimely passing of our brother in Hip Hop Phife Dawg. Today I have seen many people around the World mourn the passing of Phife and I am with everybody in that spirit of mourning for a very cool spirited brotha that passed away too soon. But I would say that in his passing is a very serious lesson that we as a Hip Hop community keep missing every time one of our people pass away.
That lesson is that Health & Wellness is the most important thing we have on Earth and it must become the focus of our culture. It should be as important or even I would say more important that being an Emcee, Dee Jay, B Boy/Girl or any other element of our culture. If you don’t have your health you don’t have anything. I saw when Phife was going through his health issues and it wasn’t cool. I know that many of you have family members that have diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, heart attacks or stroke. This is killing more people in our culture than GUNS! Yet what are we doing about it? We just hear of another death and what do we do? We go right on eating ourselves into an early grave. We miss the lesson in what just happen to the person we just lost.

I would say to everyone that Hip Hop is one of the most powerful forces on this Planet and we at Hip Hop is Green have found the perfect way to use Hip Hop at its highest form. To actually save lives. We have assembled the largest team ever in Hip Hop to battle all of the disease in our communities and today the day after Phife’s passing I’m urging everyone to check us out and support our work. Trust me when I tell you what we are doing is the future of Hip Hop!

You can help us serve healthy plant based meals and perform for youth and families as we embark on the 10th Element of Hip Hop Tour. We will visit many cities all around the country with the world's largest team of plant based Hip Hop artist, Celebrity Chefs, Best Selling Authors, Fitness experts and Health Speakers that perform and inspire youth and families to live healthy.
