🎬 #56/100 — Mattoru Divasam (Another Day)
.
.
Director : @thekevinseb

✍️ Mattoru Divasam (2026), directed by Kevin Thomas, is a nuanced Malayalam short film that finds its strength in quiet character observations and a grounded narrative. The story follows Albin, a young Chartered Accountancy graduate whose life takes an unexpected turn toward a mundane job in Dubai after a sudden physical altercation.

What could have become a conventional tale of youthful rebellion or revenge instead becomes an introspective exploration of unexpected connections. Rather than escalating the conflict, the film focuses on the unusual day that follows it, allowing the characters to exist together in moments of awkwardness, silence, and unexpected companionship.

The film’s biggest strength is its restraint. The deliberate pacing gives space for Albin’s emotions to unfold naturally, while the cinematography captures the everyday beauty of Kerala through impromptu swims, shared meals, bus-stop conversations, and fleeting moments of connection.

The performances remain refreshingly grounded, avoiding exaggerated drama and familiar cinematic archetypes. Through these subtle interactions, Mattoru Divasam shows how even the briefest encounters can leave a lasting impression.

With its naturalistic execution, quiet emotional depth, and character-driven storytelling, Mattoru Divasam proves that sometimes the most meaningful stories are found in the moments between the action.

🎯 Sometimes, the people we least expect can leave the biggest impact.

⭐ 8.5/10

Okay, here’s the thing about Mattoru Divasam.

I like short films that don’t behave like they have to win an award before the end credits.

This one doesn’t.

It’s simple. It’s intimate. And it knows exactly how much it needs to say - which, frankly, is a quality a lot of feature films could learn from.

What really stood out for me was the cinematography by Jacob Reji. There’s a restraint to the visuals that I really liked. The camera isn’t constantly shouting, “LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL SHOT!” It just quietly does its job. And sometimes that’s much harder to pull off.

And then there are Reyan Shameer and Abel Martin.

Both of them are really good.

What I liked is that they don’t perform the emotions for you. They let you find them. There’s a naturalness to their performances that makes the characters feel like actual people rather than two actors waiting for their next dialogue.

And that makes a difference.

Is Mattoru Divasam a perfect film? Maybe not.

But does it make you stop and think for a bit after it ends?

For me, yes.

And that’s more than I can say about a lot of things I’ve watched recently that came with a two-hour runtime and a massive marketing budget.

So, watch it.

It’s on YouTube. It’s short. It doesn’t cost you anything.

And if you’re someone who says, “I don’t have time to watch short films” — this is probably exactly why you should.

Mattoru Divasam. Give it a watch.
