Back in late April, @tonguencheekcollective hosted their first exhibition 'Untethered' showcasing installations, paintings and a short film exploring themes of womanhood made by @laraeskikaya @meganmannning and @thekickins1de. The opening night included some beautiful poetry, handmade merch and amazing live music from @tomsearring.

Please enjoy this video we made to document the exhibition and thank you to Lara, Megan and Ruby for letting us film such a special night!!💘

This is the first post of our series on Liverpool based @tonguencheekcollective , showcasing work by Ruby Herd (@thekickins1de).

“In my paintings I try to explore an intersection between still life studies and the form, often using still life as a self portrait. My process with oil paints is working wet onto wet paints on canvas and wood, I am interested in creating sensual atmospheric scenes rather than paintings that are visually accurate. I want to translate intimacy into my canvas and explore these private connections. By attending life drawing classes I use a lot of these drawings as a basis to create paintings, studying from life rather than photo reference helps me to create these vignettes. I am heavily inspired by expressionist painters in my own work, Edvard Munch in particular. I am fascinated by his loose stylistic brushstrokes and attention to the female form which he uses to reflect inner turmoil and sorrows. Helen Chadwick is a female artist who has also impacted my work this year. Chadwick uses installations and mixed media works to reflect upon her own ideas on sexuality and gender in a playful and cheeky way.“

🗓️: 20th April 2026

… “examining the perfumed and honeydewed haze of womanhood and femininity alongside the perverse disillusioning underbelly undermining such ‘naive’ portrayals”.

Including a tremendous performance by Manchester-based art rock band Tom’s Earring.

Grateful to these wonderful and talented artists for inviting me to a photograph a lovely private view!
