Zulum Pledges Support for Medical College at NAU Biu

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has pledged to partner with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army University, Biu, to establish a College of Medical Sciences in the institution,

Zulum made the commitment on Monday when he received the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Awwal Bawa Moriki,
the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawan Bala Buratai, alongside other management staff on a courtesy visit to Government House, Maiduguri.

The Governor expressed concern over the declining number of medical professionals in Borno and across the country, stressing the need to strengthen tertiary institutions' capacity to train doctors and other healthcare personnel as part of efforts to address the shortage of doctors and other health workers.

“I want to assure you that Borno State Government will partner with the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Army University, Biu, with a view to establishing a College of Medical Sciences in the institution,” Zulum said.

He directed the Commissioner for Education, the Vice-Chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University, the Chairman of the Governing Council of Kashim Ibrahim Teaching Hospital, the Chief Medical Director of Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital, and the management of the Nigerian Army University Biu to work together on a practical framework for the proposed college.

Zulum explained that the project would require phased implementation, beginning with establishing preclinical departments and complying with relevant regulatory requirements.

“The establishment of a new College of Medical Sciences in a university is not easy. It will take us nothing less than three to four years to actualise this dream, and we have to begin with the establishment of the preclinical departments,” he stated.

As part of preparations, the Governor approved the proposal for a Memorandum of Understanding between the state government and the Nigerian Army University, Biu, to harness the clinical training potential of the State Specialist Hospital.

“Borno State Government has agreed to your proposal for a Memorandum of Und

HON. EL LAWAN MUSTAPHA HOSTS HISTORIC UNITY MEETING WITH BOLORI 2 APC WARD EXECUTIVES, WORKING COMMITTEE AND YOUTH

In a landmark gathering described as the first of its kind in the history of Bolori 2 Ward, Hon. El Lawan Mustapha, Chairman of the Ward Working Committee and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Projects, Monitoring and Evaluation, hosted a unity and consultation meeting with members of the Ward Working Committee, old and newly elected party executives, and youth representatives.

The meeting aimed to strengthen party unity, promote harmony among stakeholders, and consolidate the structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of future political engagements.

A CALL FOR UNITY AND COMMITMENT

Addressing participants, Hon. El Lawan Mustapha emphasized the importance of unity, mutual understanding, and renewed commitment to the APC at all levels. He urged party stakeholders and members to close ranks, work collectively, and remain committed to the party’s leadership to sustain its achievements and strengthen its grassroots structures.

He reminded participants that Bolori 2 Ward has much to appreciate from the administrations of Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima and Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, particularly in the areas of development, opportunities, and support extended to the ward and its people over the years.

He stressed that one of the most meaningful ways to appreciate these contributions is through continued political support for the APC and active participation in strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

A UNITED FRONT FOR THE FUTURE

Speaking further, Hon. El Lawan Mustapha highlighted the significance of Alhaji Mustapha Gubio, describing him as a bona fide son of Gubio whose historical and cultural ties with Bolori 2 Ward should further strengthen the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity among the people.

He noted the historical significance of Bolori 2 as an early settlement area for people from northern Borno State and called on party members to embrace unity, cooperation, and collective responsibility in advancing the interests of the ward and the party.

Zulum Urges Investors to Turn Borno’s Recovery into Economic Opportunities

Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has urged Nigeria’s business leaders and private institutions to invest in the state’s recovery from insurgency, help displaced families rebuild their livelihoods, and create jobs for young people.

Governor Zulum made the call on Thursday at the opening of a two-day Borno State Durable Solutions to Internal Displacement Private Sector Roundtable at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Lagos.

The meeting, themed “Mobilising Private Capital for Durable Solutions and Sustainable Development”, was attended by senior government officials, corporate leaders, business executives, development partners, philanthropies, and other stakeholders in the sector.

The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Usman Kadafur, Zulum, asked companies and private institutions to support resettled communities, partner with vocational institutions and invest in businesses that could sustain themselves. He called for business commitments with clear timelines and measurable results.

“A camp cannot become a permanent address. And dependence cannot be the inheritance we pass from one generation to another,” Zulum said.

Zulum thanked humanitarian organisations for saving lives during the crisis, saying lasting recovery would require families to earn a living, obtain essential services and regain their independence.

He said Borno’s 25-Year Development framework aims to develop the state into a secure, competitive agribusiness and commercial hub through investment in people, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability and regional trade.

He stressed that moving a family out of a camp did not, on its own, resolve displacement. “We have learned that closing a camp is not the same thing as ending displacement,” he added.

Governor Babagana Zulum cited Monguno, where the state government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Federal Government, Germany and other partners supported the provision of 1,900 permanent homes and semi-permanent shelters, alongside 375 solar streetlights.

About 4,000 people received grants, technical and vocational training, start

Zulum's Media Chat: ADC’s Political Desperation, Impulsive Statement and Self-Indictment

We read with dismay the recent statement by the Presidential Campaign Council of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC), which made impulsive remarks about the administration of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum.

The party's press release is poorly thought out and a product of political desperation, which any keen observer would see it as "a case of self-indictment."

It was regrettable that the party relied on an unprofessionally written news report to accuse the governor of threatening opposition politicians with arrest.

For the record, Governor Zulum held a media chat with journalists in Maiduguri, addressing several issues, including a recent spike in social vices and crimes threatening the state’s peace and stability. As any responsible Chief Executive would, he emphasized that his administration would not stand by while social urchins and criminals plunge the state into violence. He referred to young men moving around wearing shirts emblazoned with knives and clubs, portraying violence.

In the aftermath of the Boko Haram insurgency, Borno State recorded a rise in gangsterism, the kidnapping of underage girls, illegal abortions, phone snatching and other social vices. To address this, the state government set up an Anti-Vices security outfit.

Since the outfit began operating, Maiduguri and its environs have become safer, with a sharp drop in social vices and criminal activity.

Media outlets with a track record of ignoring ethics and professional standards seized that part of the governor’s statement and crafted a narrative to portray him as heavy-handed, since they cannot question his achievements.

Unfortunately for the ADC, its rash statement reads as self-indictment. Governor Zulum never mentioned the #TinubuMustGo group, ADC or any opposition group; he spoke only about security, peace, and order. By issuing that statement, the ADC appears to be taking responsibility for the crimes committed by these groups across the state.

As a responsible government, Prof. Zulum’s administration will not allow the state’s hard-earned peace to be truncated; for
