HAPPY GHANA INDEPENDENCE DAY to my fellow and honorary Ghanaians! (RIP Daddy Lumba)

On this Independence Day, an ode to Ghanaian women, who are the epitome of intellect, style, and strength. Shoutout to my girl @msadjei @danikwateng for documenting Ghanaian women’s contributions through @thekorabea .

I am on a journey this year to learn more about where I came from. These women, their stories, their fashion, and their history matter so much to how I see myself. As the diaspora makes its daily trip to my birthplace each December, a gentle reminder to shop local, support those trying to make a living and a life, and embrace all the Black brilliance my homeplace has to offer. To my Ghanaians, happy Independence Day! And to my parents, happy 46th wedding anniversary (you’re getting old lol)! 🇬🇭✨

Grateful to @si.hene for organizing a community archiving workshop to take care of the stories contained in family photos: a wealth of histories, solutions and aspirations that reach us through photography.

There are so many good projects that stem out the simple act of archiving, with the goal of making available a "Vanishing past" and the transformative power of images: @the_nana_project

The year was 1965 and wigs had burst on the scene in a vibrant 8 year old Ghana.

A lot of my archival research has shown me that things change but things also stay exactly the same. The conversation around wigs today and 60 years ago is so similar.

This editorial about the impact, both positive and negative and the cultural context of wigs for US is still brewing……a whole 60 years in.

Please zoom in to read the opinions shared. Fascinating!

…….And the girls are still going to do what they want to do hunny! ….And @thekorabea is here to hold space for the gworls!

We had a great day Saturday at our Vanishing Past Workshop as we had the chance to hear from our “Custodians of Memory”! We are very appreciative to everyone who came and presented their amazing archive projects.

Listening to the diverse “Custodians of Memory” share their memories and perspectives was a rewarding experience that demonstrated the necessity of preserving our cultural history in Ghana and Africa. It was exciting to learn directly from the creators and enthusiastic archivists who are committed to preserving our past.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this event possible, as well as everyone who came. Let us continue to celebrate and protect our history together!
