The magical ol Donyo, a Great Plains property in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, with one of my oldest friends, @drdancey

I’ve been fortunate to experience a lot of extraordinary lodges over the years, and ol Donyo stands apart. Set on the Maasai-owned Mbirikani Ranch beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, it has that increasingly rare quality of making you feel completely immersed in a vast landscape rather than simply observing it from a vehicle.

The wildlife was exceptional—we watched lions on a kill and encountered elephants, giraffes, zebras and more—but what impressed me most was the sheer range of ways you can experience this part of Kenya.

The stables are among the best I’ve seen anywhere in Africa. Great horses, serious equestrian infrastructure, and the opportunity to ride across open country among wildlife completely changes your relationship with the landscape. For experienced riders, horseback riding here is not an add-on; it is a defining part of the experience.

And then there are the hides. One brings you down to ground level at the waterhole, where elephants can come within feet of you. Sitting quietly at eye level with one of Africa’s great tuskers is an entirely different kind of wildlife encounter—no vehicle, no distance, just extraordinary proximity.

For Stacey’s belated birthday, we took the doors off a helicopter and flew low over the Chyulu Hills, stopping for sundowners along the way. It was an unforgettable way to celebrate and an incredible vantage point from which to understand just how immense this ecosystem really is.

What makes ol Donyo so special is the combination of wilderness, conservation, horses, wildlife and access. There are so many ways to experience the landscape here, and each one reveals something different. That depth is what sets it apart.

After 70+ trips to Africa, this is how I would plan your perfect day on safari.

The beautiful Mwiba Lodge in Tanzania with @tskwambane, a game drive through the reserve, a long afternoon by the pool, and nowhere else we needed to be.

Some of the most unforgettable views come framed.

A window onto a distant landscape. A doorway opening into somewhere unknown. A moment that asks you to stop, look, and take it in.

Travel has a way of turning the world into a series of frames worth remembering.

DM me or my travel agency @thelegacyuntold and let us open a door to a different way of seeing the world.

Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Summit in New York.

This excerpt is from a conversation about one of the greatest gifts of travel: its ability to challenge the narratives we’re fed by the media and remind us that the world is far kinder than the headlines would have us believe.

I spent the day with the Datoga tribe in northern Tanzania, learning how daily life is divided across the family.

The men spend much of their time tending to cattle and livestock, while the women manage the home, prepare food, care for the children, and make jewelry to sell. Milk is stored and churned in gourds, meals are cooked over the fire, and the houses are built by hand using wood, mud, grass, and cattle dung.

Children are included in daily life from the beginning. They stay close to their mothers, help with smaller tasks, and learn by watching the adults around them.

What looks simple from the outside is actually a highly organized way of living, with every person responsible for a different part of the household.

DM me or my travel agency @thelegacyuntold and let us introduce you to the Datoga.

Visiting Reteti Elephant Sanctuary with one of my oldest friends, @drdancey. Located in Kenya’s Namunyak Conservancy, Reteti is a sanctuary for orphaned animals operated by the Samburu tribe.

Since opening, Reteti has rescued more than 150 orphaned elephants, with many returned to the wild.

Such a special visit and an incredible reminder of what community-led conservation can do..

OPRAH! ♥️

I’m incredibly honored to be named one of Oprah Daily’s 10 global “Trip Fixers We Trust,” and especially proud to be recognized as Best for Safaris.

I’ve taken more than 70 trips to Africa. It’s the place that sets my soul on fire, makes me feel the most alive, and reminds me how truly magnificent our planet is. My extensive scouting in Africa allows The Legacy Untold to go far beyond simply knowing the best luxury lodges. We know the best guides, helicopter pilots, scientists, rarely-visited tribal communities, and once in a lifetime experiences that turn a safari into a life changing journey.

From working with scientists to collar a wild cheetah for conservation, to communing with rarely contacted tribes, our work in Africa is built on decades of firsthand experience and deep relationships across the continent.

A huge thank you to @oprahdaily and @markellwood for this recognition, and to the entire @thelegacyuntold team and our extraordinary partners across Africa who make these journeys transformative for our travelers.

DM me or my travel agency @thelegacyuntold and let us design a life changing adventure for you and your loved ones.

The Earth has been here for billions of years, but humans have inhabited it for only a microscopic slice of that time.

For 99% of human history, we lived in harmony with Earth. We understood that the way we treated the air affected the air we breathed, the way we treated the ocean affected the health of the fish we ate, and the way we cared for forests affected the carbon dioxide that was absorbed.

Eventually, property rights, industrial agriculture, and commercial food came into existence, and hunter-gatherer life faded away. That shift changed everything: we stopped being symbiotic with the Earth and became parasitic. Now, we sit and poison our oceans and air, spraying chemicals on our food and soil.

Travel offers an opportunity to connect with indigenous and First Nations communities that still understand how to live in harmony with Earth, offering a unique perspective for us to reevaluate our relationship with the planet.

DM me or my travel agency @thelegacyuntold and get involved in the conservation of wild species and places.

Turns out “destination scouting” is just a professional way of saying, “Let’s see if this road goes anywhere.”

Ah, the occupational hazards of being a travel designer.

DM me or my travel agency @thelegacyuntold if you’re ready to get a little further off the beaten path.
