The great Lloyd Cole sings his song The Idiot, from his 2023 album On Pain.
He said that when he sings this song, he hears our favorite Jill Sobule sing it with him .
The packed house sang with then and it was glorious, Rave on Lloyd, Jill, Iggy and the thin white Duke

Went to see Lloyd Cole at the Rio Theatre last night with 2 of my close friends I went to school with! We all have been fans of his music since high school when he known as Lloyd Cole and The Commotions and put out two fantastic albums called “Rattlesnakes” (semi-produced by Ric Ocasek!) and his sophomore “Easy Pieces”. The band put a third album out but soon broke up and Lloyd began his solo career which I have followed since the early 1990’s and he’s been busy releasing excellent albums ever since! He played 2 sets both about an hour each featuring a treasure trove of his articulate poetic film noir songs ranging from his first 2 landmark albums and many other fine songs written later throughout his career. A mesmerizing standout of one of his more recent songs was “The Afterlife” (from 2019’s “Guesswork”) which he eloquently played (I’ll post that video along with “Lost Weekend”). He also surprised the audience with a beautiful rendition of “Can You Hear Me?” by David Bowie! Before he ended the show he thanked the audience for supporting him all these years but sadly he also lovingly said that this will probably be his last time through the Pacific Northwest. A collective in synched “Awww!” came from the heartbroken crowd and he proceeded to deliver a gorgeous finale with “Forest Fire”. It just proves that if there’s an artist you really like coming to town, do not hesitate and buy your tickets as it may be the last time. It was a bit of a bittersweet goodbye but time is no longer on our side anymore it seems. Anyways, it was a wonderful show and I feel fortunate to have seen Lloyd Cole perform in fairly intimate settings 3 times since 2012. I just hope he keeps recording music.

So glad I went to see @thelloydcole tonight @riotheatre in Vancouver BC. Been many years since we’ve been blessed with Lloyd’s presence and voice. One of a kind artist and story teller. From Lloyd Cole and the Commotions to his solo career.
He has always had a unique way of expressing his music moving through many different styles throughout his 40 plus year career. This is apparently his last tour which made tonight even more special . Thanks for sharing all those years in 2 magical sets #1 (back up set) and #2 (headline set) his joke.
Class act and forever glad to see this superb artist one last time tonight in an intimate little theatre in row #4 🎶🎵

“She looks like Eva Marie Saint in On the Waterfront” sang Lloyd Cole in 1984 and what better compliment could one pay a girl (who needs a gun these days, on account of all the rattlesnakes)?

Eva Marie Saint died last week at the age of 102. She was rarely, if ever, the sole star of her movies, let alone her posters, but she was a terrific co-star to both Marlon Brando in 1954 (in her film debut) and to Cary Grant in 1959.

Here are two of my favorite posters of hers: Anselmo Ballester’s Italian 2-fogli for ON THE WATERFRONT and Roger Soubie’s French grande for NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

@thelloydcole treated us to a great solo set last night. 30 songs spanning 40 years ranging from a healthy dose of Commotions era tunes all the way up to his most recent great record On Pain. He said it would be his last Portland show. I can hope that is not true, but if it is, I’m glad @north_of_45 and I were there for it.

“Why must you tell me all your secrets when it’s hard enough to love you knowing nothing?”

One of my all-time favorite singer songwriters, Lloyd Cole, put on a great career-spanning show last night at the Alberta Rose Theater.
