Imagine a school without teachers. 👩🏾‍🏫

That is what the Hope Inclusive Development Center in Mbarara, Uganda, is facing right now.

As an adult with spina bifida, I know firsthand how difficult and frustrating it is to navigate health and education in a world not designed for us.

When Ambrose Ganshanga, a physical therapist, dreamer, and doer, first reached out to me in 2010, his mission was crystal clear— to build a school and therapy center for children with spina bifida and other disabilities who were experiencing dire need, and had little hope of surviving, let alone thriving.

Since its founding in 2019, the Hope Inclusive Development Center has provided children with disabilities something they desperately needed: HOPE. The center provides them with schooling, housing, meals, and vital therapies.

But now, teachers at the center have left because the government is offering better pay— leaving the center, which is a fully non-profit venture, without the means to educate these children. What’s more, the center dormitory is FULL to capacity, and the government requires them to build a separate dormitory (one for boys, one for girls).

We can bring HOPE back to the Hope Center. I’ve started a GoFundMe, and ALL funds raised will go toward this project.

TW: Mental illness, economic struggles, hardship

Long post, but:

I am not on SNAP or disability payments because I am fortunate enough to live with my parents.

There, I said it. I am less than a week away from my birthday, and currently, I am doing only volunteer work for organizations such as The Laurita Spina Bifida Project, and for Crisis Text Line— no paid work.

I also have spina bifida and other chronic conditions that make it challenging at times to work certain jobs, and I recognize that now more than ever, when I am constantly fighting my body’s decline. It’s been exhausting.

So, don’t make the mistake of thinking that I am simply ignoring all of this vile, repulsive rhetoric against recipients of SNAP, WIC, SSI, or other need-based social programs.

The fact of the matter is, all of us need support at one time or another. Lately, I find myself reflecting a lot on a particular saying. It’s an old-timey one, for sure:

“There but for the grace of God go I.”

What it basically means is that if it weren’t for the grace of God (and circumstance), I would also be in a difficult situation.

It is by the grace of God (and frugality) that I have a comfortable home to live in. It is by the grace of God that I’ve never had to question if there will be food on our dinner table. It is by the grace of God that I have people who love me enough to care if I’m okay, not if I bring home a paycheck.

It is by the grace of God that I’m still here. 🩵

And those of you preaching “sermons” about entitlement and grifting, those of you who are spewing venom at people who are down to their last shred of grace, you apparently know very little about God’s grace, or you would be sharing some of it with our spiritual siblings. That hurts more than you will ever know. 💔

#MiGente, while I continue to take it easy and enjoy my stay in Paris, today I want to share about something I feel on a deeply personal level. 🫶🏽

We’re nearing the end of Disability Pride Month, and for days, I’ve struggled with what to say about it. 🫂

“Disability” itself is such a fluid, unique experience, and no two individuals, even living with the same diagnosis or injury, will experience it the same way. 🐛🦋

My relationship to the terminology we use to describe people living with disabilities has evolved. (I remember using the word “handicapped” a lot when I was much younger and hadn’t come to an understanding as to why it’s problematic.) ✍🏽

Then, there’s the word “disabled,” a word which I at times can make my peace with others using— just don’t use it to label me or expect me to call others “disabled.” 😒 (Always consult those living with a particular experience to ask about what they prefer!) 💡

But when I reflect on the issue of true “disability pride,” it’s not so much the terminology that comes to mind…it’s the achievements made and how far we’ve come and how long we still have to go to in order for all of us to enjoy inclusion and access. ♿️ 🦻🏼 🦯 🤟🏽

Remember— many people with disabilities do NOT live permanently in medical settings. In fact, many live in their communities, in “regular” apartments or houses, and we have every right to participate in every activity and opportunity that everyone else does! 🏡

We work, have families, enjoy social outings, travel, create, advocate, love, and grieve the same ways you do. ✈️ 🏊🏾‍♂️🧘🏻‍♀️🎬🎭🎨

Part of the “grief” for me is in relying much more on my wheelchair and experiencing more chronic health issues than before. It’s okay. It’s okay to grieve what once was as you adapt to a new phase of life. 🦽

The sadness and frustration often extends to my professional life, as despite how much I’m enjoying this season of my life, I struggle constantly with finding paid work, because historically, people with disabilities have always been vastly underemployed (currently the unemployment rate for us is around 7.5 percent!). REAL TALK: In the past year, I have gradually noticed a decline in my physical stamina and overall health. While I believe mobility is a spectrum, and walking doesn’t automatically equal a great quality of life, relying more on my wheelchair and having to say “no” to more activities because of my health really sucks. 😣 (I’ll share more about my ongoing journey to get my new wheelchair soon after 15+ years!) 🦽

I don’t say this to gain pity or sympathy— I say it because it’s a sad reality of living with spina bifida in a “modern” world that is not yet fully accessible or inclusive. ♿️

I feel beaten. I feel exhausted. I feel alone in my advocacy. 😔

It shouldn’t be up to just us! It should be up to everyone. And I honestly need more than just one lousy month. 💪🏽🧡

Voici un premier post très important sur ma page d’une série de posts qui suivront sur les maladies / handicaps que j’ai envie de présenter. Parcourez les slides, à la fin vous verrez une petite surprise !

Je commence avec ma maladie : la Spina Bifida, une maladie de naissance qui m’a fait de lourdes séquelles neurologiques, motrices et urinaires.

Je vis avec ce handicap depuis ma naissance, j’ai toujours été habituée à vivre avec, petite je portais des attelles, des corsets. J’ai été opérée beaucoup de fois, j’ai eu de très longues hospitalisations. Heureusement ma famille m’a toujours bien entourée, je n’ai jamais manqué d’amour. J’ai toujours été joyeuse, le sourire aux lèvres constamment, je respirais le bonheur malgré les gros soucis qui me touchaient.

Dans ce post vous trouverez ce qu’est la Spina Bifida, quels sont les conséquences et les maladies associées, les séquelles, l’opération, comment on détecte et comment on prévient la maladie.

Ce post est très important pour moi, on m’a toujours demandé ce qu’était cette maladie dont je souffrais, et pourquoi aujourd’hui je suis en fauteuil roulant. J’ai des soucis urinaires et digestifs qui me pèsent au quotidien…

Living with chronic pain requires “adapting” to the pain, but now and then, it’s fantastic to forget about it for 5 minutes in a department store. 😴

I took to @medium to address the airline “junk fee controversy” that has played out in the news in the past few months that has even seen the Biden administration calling for action from lawmakers and federal officials. Since people with disabilities have been largely absent from the debate, I highlighted why exceptions to these fees need to be made to allow passengers with medical or other personal needs to travel beside a caregiver. ✈️✍🏽🦽
