Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) is one of the most meaningful celebrations in Chinese culture—a time for family reunion, gratitude, and looking up at the same full moon together. 🌕🥮

Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the festival has roots in ancient traditions surrounding the moon, the autumn harvest, and giving thanks. Over generations, stories like Chang’e (嫦娥) and Hou Yi (后羿) also became an important part of how Mid-Autumn Festival is remembered and shared.

The full moon represents reunion (團圓) and completeness. Families gather, share mooncakes and tea, admire the moon, and pass these traditions from one generation to the next.

For some families, Mid-Autumn is also a time to remember loved ones who are no longer with us. Offerings such as fruit and mooncakes may be prepared, while incense and joss paper are offered as expressions of remembrance and care.

Behind the mooncakes, lanterns, and traditions is something that has remained the same for generations: family, gratitude, and togetherness.

Here in the heart of San Francisco Chinatown, we hope to continue sharing the meaning behind these traditions and help keep them alive for the next generation.

Different generations, different traditions—but we still look up at the same moon. 🌕

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! 中秋節快樂! 🥮🏮
