A little snapshot from our lamp base and shade workshop! Completely thrilled with the outcomes of all our makers - both with what they produced on our creative day and with how we all felt post many discussions and chats around all things neurodivergent.

We had a good laugh about…..

🧠 super clean clothes after repeated cleaning from forgetting to get the contents out of the machine

🧠 colour coding washing hanging on the line

🧠 being empathetic/people pleasing to the point a business owner didn’t just end up doing it for nothing - it cost her money

🧠 dishwasher stacking - the Scandinavian architect verses raccoon on meth ☺️

Hosting this workshop for me is hands down my most favourite thing (work wise) in the world. Bringing women together creatively - watching and listening to these amazing women share who they are and in turn leaving with not only something beautiful they’ve made but lighter in mind and empowered to embrace and 💯 be themselves ❤️

☂️The Umbrella Hub ☂️

During the process of looking at our branding it was suggested we might want to rethink our name for something a little less of a mouth full. We felt the umbrella hub (although not much less of a mouth full 😆) really embodied what we are tying to achieve - scooping up all neurodivergent women under one big supportive umbrella. Really excited to see what branding suggestions @lucieselby_design comes up with in the next week or so ☺️.

💡ADHD in Women 💡

As part of #neurodiversityawareness week we wanted to share a couple of fantastic resources we have come across during our journey of understanding more about ADHD in women.

🧠 First up is @adhd_womenswellbeing_pod which is a podcast run by Kate Moryouseff. There are over 50 episodes of super helpful informative fact filled conversations with experts from all corners of the neurodiverse world and a brilliant place to start your journey of discovery.

🧠 Next is @adhd_love_ it’s an incredible insta account about a couple who use compassion, kindness and humorous videos to share their experiences of living with woman with ADHD which are so relatable they have me in stitches. I think i might have shared almost every video to my family group chat with - “OMG - this is sooooooo me!!” They have also released a Times best selling book book called Dirty Laundry.

These pics were taken at new year at #waltononthenaze - a wild and natural beach - such a special place.

Continuing with #neurodiversitycelebrationweek these are some of the things we would like to see celebrated in the workplace:
•embracing different working styles and accomdating these.
•celebrating people’s strengths and supporting them in their challenges
•designing the workspace to suit everyone’s sensory needs
If these things were to become the norm it could:
•reduce the number of secondary diagnoses of anxiety disorders and depression due to not living up to society’s expectations
• Reduce the need to self medicate using drugs, alcohol or other addictions
•Improve self esteem which could have a knock on effect on achievement
• reduce feelings of failure, alienation, distress and discrimination
•We could actually end up with a more prosperous society, full of people who are valued for their worth and contribution

Only one spot left on our lamp base and shade workshop next Friday 24th March. If you’re interested in coming along follow the link in our bio to view details about the content as well as costs etc. It does include a delicious spring grain salad for lunch as well as some yummy cake and as much tea and fresh coffee as you can drink. We will be repurposing wooden lamp bases sourced second hand and fabric for the 50cm shades from our own (extensive 😬) stash!

Last weekend we held our second in person meet up where we had tea, cake and talked all things 😷masking😷. As a group we shared our experiences of this, how for women and girls masking can hide a myriad of issues and in turn means a diagnosis or even just recognising there is a potential divergence, very challenging. But the freedom and liberation that it brings when we are able to fully demask is almost indescribable. It’s like removing a lifetime rucksack of guilt and shame which in turn can allow us to thrive and achieve anything.

We also sent out our first newsletter at the beginning of the week which allows us to share what we’ve been up to, information around neuodivergence we think might be helpful and share some exciting plans for the coming weeks and months in lots more detail. Happy International Women’s Day 🎂🌸. Don’t know where I’d be now without the women I work with, the buddies I surround myself with daily and the ones who are never far from my heart, as well as the rock bed family support of my sisters, nieces, god daughter, in laws and aunties . I hope my daughters grow up to be as awesome as their clan 💝❤️😘🎂. Aren’t women just bloody brilliant? Also! HBD to my mum who is 86 today. I’m currently batch cooking for an upcoming girls weekend so today feels very apt . One question that gets me every year though … WHY CELEBRATE JUST ONE DAY?! 💝.

Next in the small business spotlight is Beckie.

Beckie is the most wonderful creative consultant, stylist and maker. Since meeting Beckie at a @kinship_creativedc gathering last year we have been bowled over by not only her creativity, but also her warmth and kindness.

Not only is Beckie a champion of sustainability and creativity with @themakingbee but has also joined forces with @_rekindled to form the @creative_differences_hub a supportive hub for women exploring neurodiversity through creativity.

This week Beckie and I took a trip to the @workspacedesignshow @bdclondon in Islington. We specifically wanted to listen to a talk about people led design with Oliver Heath @oliverheathdesign, Vidhi Shah from @modusworkspace and Jamesina Sainsbury of @mcm_uk
A big focus of the talk was designing for neurodiversity, and specifically for people’s differing sensory needs. For me as an Occupational Therapist with a background in sensory processing differences, this was music to my ears! It is amazing to see that this is becoming part of a standard for design and not just for people who are neurodiverse, but for everyone (we all have our own unique sensory profiles) And it just confirmed our feelings, that if the world was designed for neurodiversity in all aspects, it would be a better, more comfortable, beautiful and accessible world for everyone!

I was so pleased to hear that they consulted with Occupational Therapist Dr Annemarie Lombard from @sensoryintelligence7 an expert in sensory processing. This really is the dream for me, two things that I am absolutely passionate about beautiful design and sensory needs coming together.

Please share this with anyone who might be involved in designing workspaces. It is beneficial to anyone who works in an office space.
