This past summer before Juneteenth, the Reconstructing Richmond team filmed the Elegba Folklore Society’s interactive tour, In the Beginning…Virginia, Along the Trail of Enslaved Africans.

Through ceremony, music, and historical interpretation, the experience begins on the south shores of the James River, through the cobblestoned streets of Shockoe before landing at the African Burial Ground. The moment held both gravity and connection: to those being remembered, to the land, and to one another.

We’re grateful to share a glimpse of this transformative experience — and to EFS for carrying this history forward.

Behind the scenes, as July 4th weekend arrives.

This past weekend, Reconstructing Richmond filmed at IllumiNATION — the Virginia Museum of History & Culture’s immersive video-art projection marking America’s 250th, cast across the museum’s historic facade in light, imagery, and music, with the whole district alive in a block-party atmosphere.

We spent the evening in conversation, asking attendees what this moment means: the importance of Juneteenth, what freedom for all really looks like, and how the illumination moved them. Those voices are the kind of testimony this film is built to hold.

More filming ahead, including the Fourth of July. Grateful you’re with us.

Happy Belated Juneteenth!

Our summer filming season launched with Torch Lit Walk along the Trail of Enslaved Africans led by Elegba Folklore Society. Our crew worked from 5pm through midnight, capturing drone and ground footage throughout the walking route from the Manchester Docks into the heart of Shockoe Bottom.

It was cinematic and emotional — actor L. Roi Boyd reenacted several roles, including the portrayal of a slave driver whose manner helped participants feel history untold in both the dehumanizing objectification of enslavement and empathy for our Ancestors.

We also filmed at the African Burial Grounds and interviewed attendees at the Dancing with the Ancestors festival.

This past Juneteenth weekend, we filmed the annual Churchill Juneteenth parade between St. John’s Church and Peter Paul RVA, with powerful words from guest speaker Michael Paul Williams, the Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist, followed by food, fellowship, and a sit-down interview with Pastor Bill Queen inside the historic St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

On Saturday, we filmed and interviewed attendees at a Juneteenth gospel concert at Virginia Union University, a Radio One Juneteenth festival at Bon Secours training center, and a culminating Juneteenth celebration at Dorey Park, where more than 20,000 people came together for music, community, and fireworks.

The weekend closed with SONGS OF TRUTH: The Awakening, about the life of Sojourner Truth, at the historic Hippodrome Theatre in Jackson Ward, where we caught up with cast and crew, including director Tanya Birl-Torres. The next morning, on the shores of the James River — hours before her flight back to New York — she sat down for an unfiltered conversation about Richmond, ancestry, and the work of telling the truth.

That interview is coming soon, so stay tuned for more updates and leave a comment on your favorite Juneteenth photo.

Reconstructing Richmond reached — and passed — its crowdfunding goal, raising more than $26,000 from our supporters for this independent documentary.

Last week, friends of Reconstructing Richmond gathered for our donor reception at Lavender Hill — a chance to meet the team, hear where the the film is headed, screen exclusive footage, and stand together in the work.

The timing was special: it came during the final push of our crowdfunding campaign with Seed + Spark. Thanks to the people in that room and so many beyond it, we reached our goal. This is what community-powered filmmaking looks like. This campaign is closed, but the movement is just getting started.

This summer brings more filming across Richmond, building toward our capture of Altars Festival in November. We intend to make this film the same way we started it — with you.

And there are still plenty of ways to be part of it. If you’d like to keep supporting the film — including through a direct donation — reach out anytime and we’ll walk you through the options. Follow along with us here on IG to see the story unfold.

We did it! With less than 12 hours remaining in the campaign, Reconstructing Richmond has officially reached its $25,000 crowdfunding goal. And we have until midnight to do more!

To every donor, supporter, volunteer, partner, friend, family member, and community member who believed in this project enough to share it, contribute to it, and champion it: thank you.

This campaign began with a vision. Today, it has become a community-powered reality.

While we’ve reached our initial goal for this phase of filming, the work is not done. Every additional pledge made before the campaign closes helps deepen the work ahead — continuing to film across Richmond, expanding local crew and production support, conducting more interviews, investing in research, advancing post-production, and building a stronger foundation for the next phase of the documentary.

Additional support doesn’t just help our team finish the film. It helps us tell a richer, more expansive story and dream bigger about the full breadth and depth of what this project can become.

Because Reconstructing Richmond is more than just a documentary. It’s a movement.

It’s about culture, community, repair, and reconstruction in real time. It’s about preserving stories that might otherwise go untold and creating a record of what becomes possible when people choose to build together.

Thank you for helping us reach this milestone.

And if you’ve been waiting to join us, there’s still time.

🎬 Campaign closes tonight at 11:59 PM EST.

We’re 93% funded with 1 day to go!

In the next 24 hours, help us reach — and surpass — our goal!

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the project, followed the campaign, and helped spread the word about Reconstructing Richmond so far.

This is more than a documentary — this is a movement.

This phase of funding will support continued filming across Richmond this summer, local crew and production costs, post-production development, and ultimately the capture of Altars Festival in November 2026.

If you’ve been considering making a pledge, now is the time. Explore the campaign’s support tiers to find one that feels aligned with you, or choose a custom contribution amount that feels meaningful.

If you’ve already contributed, we appreciate you joining the movement. One of the most impactful things you can do right now is share the campaign with friends, colleagues, and community members who may connect with the vision behind this work. All support by tomorrow at midnight makes a difference.
