“Every semester, for the past six years… just because he believes all kids deserve to know what this feels like.” — Sarah Trudgeon, @themastheads

I’m honored to teach songwriting in Pittsfield schools with the @blackwingfoundation and The Mastheads. We write the songs together and the kids draw the album art. Then every year we close it out with a party in Kellogg Park, where they sing the songs they wrote. Watching them make something out of nothing is one of the most rewarding parts of my life.

6 years. 11 songs. Hundreds of kids. Stream The Fireside Poets — link in bio.

Last week, the Morningside community came together at Kellogg Park for the 5th Annual Party in the Park—a celebration of creativity, connection, and student voice.

Families gathered for a free neighborhood celebration filled with music, poetry, books, and student-created art. The afternoon featured lively student performances alongside hands-on science and art activities led by Flying Cloud Institute, Berkshire Art Center, and MAPS Music Art Puppet Sound, creating a joyful community event for all ages.

The celebration also marked the release of A Couple Thousand Things I Like, a new student artist book created with Citation Needed Press, along with additional student-designed books and artwork.

Hosted in celebration of Morningside Community School in its final year.

One day retreat at the Mastheads @themastheads complete with an aesthetic that reminded me of both YESTERYEAR ranch and that one episode in Schitts Creek where David gets left behind with the Amish 🐦‍⬛ I got a tour of Herman Melville’s former home. He moved out there at age 30 having written 5 (!) books and he worked on Moby Dick staring out at the fields instead of the sea. Not pictured: many many tics

a beautiful weekend writing residency @themastheads to work on the manuscript of my forthcoming memoir. some facts: all of it was written by hand. ghosts are involved. so are these little erasure poems from Bluets by Maggie Nelson, my literary namesake. if you manage to zoom in, you might catch the title—or you can wait until June 9th when it all goes live 🌱

2025 was a wild year for citation needed.

for those of you who are new here—this project grew from a cart in ari’s apartment into a multi-borough, multidimensional workshop series and publishing project over the course of this year. we’re still a two-person team, and this year we worked with over 1,000 participants (!!).

we’re so grateful to all of our collaborators, volunteers, partner organizations, and families. because of you, we’re leaving 2025 in a much more sustainable place than we entered it. we hit some big milestones along the way, and wanted to take a moment to share what this year looked like:

1 — an incredible light photograph cristina made with students at sunnyside library during our science of sight summer residency @qplnyc
2 — a penguin from our first book of the year, created with @art_omi, it would be called winter.
3 — a print and collage from imagined futures, held during women’s history month at 10 queens public library locations.
4 + 5 — workshops and production on six (!!) student-generated artist books made with our friends and collaborators, @themastheads .
6 — a process shot from our afterschool program where we piloted “guest designers,” featuring the amazing @_helenyang.
7 + 8 — our most ambitious collation yet, for unstandardized, made with corona public library and supported by flushing town hall and nyfa grants. we got our new studio just in time to collate this book.
9 — cyanotype at ridgewood library during science of sight.
10— accordion experiment during our comics program at woodside public library.
11 — paper pulp from an especially memorable process art workshop with the episcopal mission in sunnyside @way.of.love.in.sunnyside
12 — our dear friends pau and felize of @_badstudent, (who met this year!) after an mtfa run.
13 — carrot painting from a whirlwind of workshops and publication in marseille, france @iamprojectbox @jucafiis @sometimes__always
14 — baby’s first nyabf @printedmatter_artbookfairs
15 — ridgewood public library’s 96th birthday party, held during our workshops and culminating in our first 2026 publication, forest library.
