Not a bucket list walk but a useful, after work, pretty little 5km loop combining the River Test and the Downs….and, as we all like, a pub at the end.

There are lovely views, pretty cottages, stretches beside the river and you’ll also pass Chalkdown Winery on the way round.

One thing to know: it isn’t completely off-road. There’s a decent section along a quiet country lane, so dogs would need to be on a lead there.

We parked in the small car park opposite The Mayfly and started the loop from there.

A really easy one to save before the clocks change for after work when you want a walk, a bit of countryside and somewhere nice for a drink afterwards.

Worth noting the Mayfly pub is currently undergoing renovations but open end of the month!

An iconic riverside pub on the banks of the River Test in Hampshire...

Just near Stockbridge with one of the best beer gardens around this is @themayflypub 🐟

The river Test is world famous for its superb trout fishing And earlier this year I walked the whole of the test way walk with some of its 36 miles passing right along its banks. Recommend it!

This week I have come to Chilbolton. Having Cow Down Common on the doorstep is one of the magical elements of living in the village! And it is not the only common space available in the village as there is West Downs Nature Reserve just down the road.

The village has two pubs, @themayflypub which is situated on the edge of the River Test and the village has a wonderful reputation and the most beautiful riverside garden and @abbotsmitre that is in the heart of the village and has a good pub grub menu.

The village has a 12th century chuch, a village shop @chilbolton_village_store, that sells an array of local products, @chilboltonvillagehall and a sports ground with football, table tennis, basketball and a playground.

In addition there is the Chilbolton Observatory offers a unique combination of facilities and expertise in atmospheric science, satellite tracking, radio astronomy and communications to support UK academia and industry.

The village has a good diverse range of property and with the Common a lovely place to walk or swim.

The local school is at Wherwell on the other side of the valley and the excellent @farleighschool is just down the road.

The commute would be from Andover or possibly Micheldever and for day to day shopping there is Stockbridge

What a show. What an audience. What a summer. 🌹🎭

Last night we brought the curtain down on Romeo & Juliet, and we couldn’t have asked for a better final evening.

First and foremost, a huge thank you to our incredible cast, creatives and crew. Night after night, venue after venue, you brought this production to life with so much energy, skill, humour and heart. Quite simply, there would be no show without you. ❤️

To everyone who joined us last night, and to every audience who filled a garden, cheered us on, came back for another show, brought friends and family, shared photos and spread the word this summer, thank you.

A huge thank you too to every @fullers venue that welcomed us along the way, to @fullers for their continued support of Shakespeare in the Garden, and to this year’s fabulous tour sponsor @lillet. 🌿🍷

That’s a wrap on Romeo & Juliet 2026. What a summer it’s been. ❤️

We’ve still got a few favourite moments from the tour to share, so this isn’t quite the last you’ll see of it. 🌹

🌟 Some places you just need to visit, and the @themayflypub in Stockbridge is definitely one of them 😍

Situated right to the River Test, this stunning riverside country pub serves up spectacular views, endless country charm and seriously delicious food.

The Mayfly gets incredibly busy, so booking is highly advisable. We booked the night before for a mid-week lunch and managed to secure the very last table. Whilst it was an early 11.45am sitting, it ended up paying off beautifully and we were awarded with one of the ultimate spots right next to the water 😍

To start we shared the Greek Mezze, packed with flatbreads, fresh hummus, feta, sun blushed tomatoes, babaganoush, raita and olives - highly recommended as the perfect sharing starter!

For our mains I had the chilli & garlic marinated prawns served with a tomato orzo pasta - it was plentiful, the prawns were HUGE and it had just the right amount of kick 🌶️

My husband opted for the cheeseburger, with added streaky bacon and bacon jam - giving the bacon jam an outstanding 10/10 - apparently it was unlike anything he had ever tasted before.

We were far too full for dessert this time, but the menu looked incredible!

We absolutely loved our visit to the Mayfly, Between the picturesque views, great vibes, delicious food, excellent wine and gorgeous company 😉 it was a perfect afternoon 😍 🍷

We are already planning our next return and next time will add in a walk around the beautiful Stockbridge.
