Starting this holiday soirée season with a classic! Owwww! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
2023 has been pretty good to me ~ yes there were hiccups (strikes & tangs) but how ‘The Sound She Saw’ is still deep on her national museum tour and poked her pretty toe into the academia and international symposium world, and how Mz M’DEAR had an amazing exhibition run for the entire summer & half of fall and basically showed all the way out!!!
These were all dreams just a minute ago and I am forever Grateful for finally getting out of my own way, betting on myself (what?) and dreaming Big and Out Loud, ‘cause ain’t nobody got time for ‘shoulda, wouldas’ over here!
Life is precious and glorious even in this chaotic and ridiculous world. It is meant to be lived.
Right now! So, if you have breath in your beautiful, capable and divine body, be Thankful, Greet the day, Find some Beauty and get you some JOY! ‘Cause that Joy is ‘All Over My Face! Join me my Loves! 😘✨😘

Can’t wait to see you as we close an incredible run celebrating the work of 18 Black women multidisciplinary artists addressing access to, and denial of agency, and expression of identity, while exploring the roots of invisibility, themes of silent, co-opting, and trivializing the concept of the great mother for amusement seek. ✨

Resisting stereotypes, M’DEAR exists within a context of the gender power duality of masculine/feminine, as she is the matriarch, often given final counsel, while imparting the loving guidance of a nurturing mother. She expresses power and leadership through her unwavering perseverance. ✨

Join us for a dynamic artist talk that will highlight the 'M'Dear: The Black Maternal' exhibition, which is still on view at MoCADA Abolition House. Curator Crystal Whaley will be your moderator as artists Adreinne Waheed and Djassi DaCosta Johnson take you on a journey through their creative process in crafting works that delve into agency, identity, and societal narratives.⁠

We are also excited to introduce three of our 2023 Bandung Residents including Margaret Rhee, Sunnie Liu, and Malaika Temba, who will be unveiling new installations that explore solidarity between Black and AAPI communities. ⁠

Spelman and Prarie View came through ~ sprinkled with a few Hampton University Pirates, and Howard Bison made M’Dear’s HBCU DAY pop! We have a ball picnicking, enjoying the sun, the exhibit, and each other made a fabulous Saturday afternoon!

Step inside the historic houses of Nolan Park and Colonels Row this weekend to experience some of the city’s most exciting arts, cultural, and educational nonprofits! The #GovIslandArts Organizations in Residence are open every Friday-Sunday with free exhibits, activities, programs, and events for all ages.
