Though today the East Village might seem like a special hair salon district, when Whistle Salon first opened its doors in 2004, there were only four other salons in the area. Now, there are five on the same block alone. Owner of Whistle Salon, Will Johnson, attributes this to the characteristically narrow layout of East Village storefronts: “It’s perfect for [the salon] business!” Whistle Salon customers seem to feel the same. Will and the other stylists have had many of the same customers for 15-20 years. Now, some of them send their kids to the salon!
Whistle Salon joined EVIMA to be part of the larger East Village community, important to their ethos of being a community salon. Despite the difficulties of being an independent merchant, Will feels like there are even more small businesses in the East Village, making it a small business destination. Some favorites include @clashcitytattoo, @lucysbarnyc, and @aumshantinyc.
In need of a funky cut or a maintenance makeover? Head to Whistle Salon!
