***Darkness is your ally.***

Eloise has spent her entire meaningless existence in the town of Jyra under Imperial rule. It’s here she reads the same old books and works the same dull job, all the while concealing her powerful magic from the town elders, who wouldn’t hesitate to exile, enslave, or execute her if they ever discovered the truth of what she was: a weaver capable of manipulating the threads that bind the world together.

So when Eloise receives a mysterious letter revealing her inheritance of an old mansion, she leaps at the opportunity to escape her boring life and leave Jyra behind.

However, within the mansion’s shadow lurks an old curse binding souls to its ancient halls. It’s here she meets the mansion’s occupants and the most unlikely visitor, an Eldorian Lord named Tristan, who is charged with a single task: hunting and imprisoning weavers.

As Eloise and Tristan’s paths become entangled, she must embrace her weaver blood or continue concealing her own identity. Now, she and her companions must tread through a world of dark secrets, blood magic, and ancient creatures as they search for a way to break the curse. Will they succeed, or will Hornwood Mansion claim their souls?

*The Heart of Hornwood* is a dark fantasy that draws inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s original novel *The Haunting of Hill House* & Mike Flannigan’s TV Series adaptation, blending them with classic fantasy elements such as thread magic, terrifying monsters, and mysterious curses. Perfect for fans of Jay Kristoff and Ryan Cahill who love epic action, complex magic, expansive worldbuilding, and romantic subplots.

Happy Summer Reading from the Library of SD.
The shelves around here don't stick to one genre. Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, thrillers, literary fiction—you name it, I'll probably give it a shot.
What's the best book you've read this year? Let me know... the Library's TBR is always accepting new additions. 📚 #readersofinstagram #blackbookstagram

55 hours to pay tribute to my favorite fictional character of all time? Say less. Every inch of this piece was hand crafted with the intention of reflecting @piercebrownofficial ‘s Lorn Au Arcos. Rugged, rode hard and hung up wet, but never losing its honor, it is a fitting home for an ashcan collection.

Making this for a fellow howler’s Book of Lorn collection was so much fun, and a big step outside my comfort zone.

A VERY special thank you to @bookandboxco for letting me use his incredible House Arcos design, it truly is the center of gravity on this piece.

Anji Kills a King Broadside
Evan Leikam @book_reviews_kill

Historically, I have done all of our broadsides much the same way, which is to commission the illustration and then work with the same printer (James Freemantle of St James Park Press) to bring it to fruition. We generally print directly from woodblocks or linocuts, and sometimes when using pen-and-ink artists from magnesium plates.

This one was done quite a bit differently as Griffin of Portland-based No Reply Press offered to generously let us use his facility to print a broadside in person when I was there a couple months ago. He offered to teach us the basics (even though he said he was just going to drink Margaritas he did end up doing the lion share of the work, haha) and let us create a broadside in a single session. When he offered this, I thought it would be really fun to bring the author into the project and the first person I thought of was my friend and Portland-based author Evan Leikam @book_reviews_kill.

I had recently read Anji Kills a King and the pieces of imagery that stuck with me were the masks of The Menagerie. When I pictured them in my head, the artist that immediately came to mind was Karl Trewhela @karltrew_art who is a master of the macabre and terrifying. One of my favorite things about art direction is it allows you to pass on a vision that you have in your head and then see it come to fruition even better than you could have imagined. As before when I have worked with him, he did not disappoint!

I am so happy with the final result even though we had a short couple hour window to do four separate runs on this broadside with two colors. More than anything, it was great getting to spend time with Griffin and Evan!

This was so much fun that I'm planning on doing it again in 2027 when I visit Portland if it all works out and I've got a familiar face lined up for the next impromptu broadside (The Tethered God)... @noahsbriskreviews 😉
