Long live The Moon. We had our second gig here and they’ve continued to host our (sometimes ridiculous) volume levels all the years we’ve continued to return. Gutted to lose an integral part of the Cardiff grassroots music scene. See you on another stage, on another planet, another time. #cardiff #TheMoon

Gutted to hear that @themooncardiff has shut its doors for good today. We’ve lost one of Cardiff’s finest music venues and a real matchday staple 💔

MVT Statement on the closure of The Moon Cardiff. Sadly, despite all the positive direction that government and industry seems now to be heading in, and everyone trying to get to grips with the challenges being faced by our grassroots music ecosystem, it isn’t happening fast enough to save vital spaces that are much loved and valued by their communities and essential to artists. The Moon is the perfect example of one of those spaces; incredibly important to local artists and music lovers, run by a dedicated and passionate team who have pulled out all the stops trying to keep the doors open, doing everything they could together as a community to keep music live. The external pressures on these venues cannot be met by these operators alone, and we must, urgently and without further delays, have a comprehensive action plan from the very top of the live music industry down to the very beginnings of people’s passion for live music that delivers real change and saves our venues from closure. We have consistently warned the Government that financial burdens from things like poorly conceived and delivered Business Rates was placing too much pressure on venues like the Moon. Not enough action has been taken quickly enough and now another venue has been lost. We’d like to thank the whole Moon team for everything they’ve done for music in Cardiff and for being such an active part of this community during incredibly tough times. Please read their statement in full from the link in our bio.

What feels like a lifetime ago me and @spun_tongue made this video during the #savewomanbystreet campaign. It felt fitting that this video came back up when guildhall place was under threat... Here we are...@themooncardiff , where we filmed this video closed. Everyone who has ever talked to me knows how much I love @lepub . But the moon was the closest place to that I had in the city I call home. Not so long ago, literally weeks ago, there were fluffy pieces written about Cardiff's music scene was alive and well (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/music/2024/oct/01/cardiff-music-scene-revival-welsh), but from 2017 until now, we have seen closures of so many grass roots venues it's fucking heart breaking. Dempsey's, gone. Gydihw, gone. Buffalo, gone. Tenfeettall, gone. Ocean arts, gone. Shift, gone. The moon... Gone. Cardiff dares to call itself a "music city"... arts funding goes to opera and Welsh language projects. People lose their fucking minds over the stereophonics playing the millennium stadium.... And we, the small time bands and artists have to wave goodbye to another place we felt at home. Newport, a place most people call a shit hole has put Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, to fucking shame for it's support of local bands and support of it's community. Cardiff, straight up deserves better. I'm done ranting now.

Super gutted about the closure of The Moon. Sending love to Carly and all the staff past and present who put so much energy into this amazing place. We loved playing there and made so many friends over the years. Cardiff is culturally a lot poorer without this venue. Sad times.

I'm sure by now you have seen the incredibly sad news about @themooncardiff . This is an incredible blow to Cardiff's music scene and we can't explain how excited we were to be posting there, to finally be playing our first Cardiff show and playing for the amazing @pleasemindyourheadx . We've had the conversations, and at the moment the amazing people are trying to sort a new venue for the show. We will keep you updated as soon as we know anything.

This photo is 12 years old and it captures the importance of grass roots venues like @themooncardiff perfectly for me. It also now feels like a time capsule of a lost place. My old friend @thedoublecrossuk playing to a small but appreciated crowd. Grassroots venues give artists and bands not only a place to play, but a place to find a community, a place to make friends, a place to find a voice you never knew you had, a place to feel appreciated, a place to be heard... Yesterday Cardiff lost an enormously important room that gave so many of us a start. I know how amazing it is that Lauren Hill came and played the CIA. The amazing summer of shows at the castle were magical for so many of us. It was amazing to see the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, P!nk and more filling the Millennium stadium. But we need small spaces like The Moon to get to these shows. If Cardiff wants to call itself a "music city" then it needs to protect small venues. If Cardiff wants to have it's month long multivenue music festival (that the press got so very excited about) then there needs to be venues for that to happen in! I'm in a stupid wrestling theme song tribute band called @thesmallpackages . There is one less place that would welcome our unique brand of weird now.
