Interested in picking up a film camera but not sure where to start?

I promise you don’t need anything expensive or fancy. Something simple and easy to use is perfect, or dig out something you’ve had buried away in a drawer or gathering dust on the shelf for a while.

Try to avoid traditional disposable cameras. They can end up costing nearly as much as a reloadable camera, but they’re single-use and create a lot more plastic waste. It’s worth spending a few pounds more on something you can use again and again.

Here are a few film camera recommendations, and where you can find them locally. All under £50.

Here are a few film camera recommendations, and where you can find them locally. All under £50.

Kodak M35 - Colourful and cute, a lovely first film camera. Comes with a built-in flash, and with the right film, it can produce some genuinely lovely photos.

AGFAPHOTO 35 - Really similar to the Kodak H35, but a bit more of a classical grown-up vibe and just as easy to use.

Kodak Ektar H35 - Similar to the M35, a little more expensive. But is known as a half-frame camera. Instead of the usual 36 photos per roll, you get 72. Double the photos, double the chances to experiment and get creative.

Two Photographers, One Scene

One of the things we love about working together as @wearefound.uk is how differently we can see the exact same place.

We took our cameras for a wander through Cheap Street and, looking at the photographs afterwards, started to notice just how different our approaches are.

Lloyd tends to step back and build the whole scene, drawing from film inspiration and looking for characters, architecture, leading lines and a sense of place. Sophie is drawn closer, noticing details, reflections, textures and the smaller moments within a scene.

It’s why we work so well together. Our styles complement each other, creating a fuller picture and giving us two ways of telling the same story.

Same walk, same streets, but two different perspectives.

I was honoured to witness an incredible group of women deeply connect with themselves and what they needed in the moment. Wow. I can’t wait to hold space again.
