THE BLACK DEATH DEVASTATED THE MAMLUK EMPIRE.
In 1347, one of history's deadliest pandemics reached the Mamluk Sultanate.
From Alexandria and Cairo to cities across Syria, the plague devastated communities and disrupted an empire that had once defeated the Mongols.
Historians estimate that roughly a quarter to a third of Egypt's population died in the initial outbreak.
And it didn't end there.
Repeated waves of plague continued for generations, weakening the economy and transforming Egyptian society.
The Mamluks survived the Black Death, but they would eventually fall to the Ottoman Empire in 1517.

Salahuddin wasn’t a Turk. So why was he called “Sultan al Turk”?

Ahmad Baba al-Timbukti was the only scholar manning the fort for all of Sub-Saharan Western Africa in the 16th century. He passed fatwas against the slave trade before Europe had fully built the system. These are all critical things he did and we never talk about him.

Muslim Scholars Banned Coffee Because They Ran Out of New Ideas

Cairo scholars banned coffee in the 15th century because fiqh had no ruling on it. Not a drug. Not an intoxicant. They just did not know what box to put it in and nobody was allowed to create new rulings anymore. Imam Suyuti stood up and said I am a mujtahid and I will figure this out. The whole establishment turned on him. The same question he was fighting is the one nobody has answered today. Who is the Imam Suyuti of our time?

Most people think Imam Ibn Taymiyyah and Sufism were on opposite sides. But he actually held a Qadiri ijazah. He was initiated into the same Sufi order founded by Abdul Qadir al-Jilani.

That does not mean he agreed with everything the Sufi tradition became. He was absolutely a reformer. He wanted to cut away what he saw as innovation and bring Islam back to the text. But the idea that he was simply anti-Sufi is not the full picture.

He was undefeated. Not a single battle lost.

He conquered the Byzantine Empire and the Persian Empire back-to-back in under a decade. Soldiers ten and twenty times his number broke against him.

The Prophet ﷺ himself gave him the title — Sayfullah. The Sword of Allah.

Then at the height of his powers, the Caliph fired him.

In 636. In the middle of the greatest military expansion in human history. The greatest general of all time. Removed.

Was it the right call? Did Umar ibn al-Khattab see something the rest of us still don't? Or was it the most controversial firing in Islamic history — a squandered talent we never got back?
