One birthday dinner, two favorite dishes✨

We celebrated Allan’s birthday with a table full of dishes to share, and naturally we each ended up with our own favorites.

What we ordered: Korean Aguachile, Chilled Acorn Noodles, Beef Short Rib, plenty of greens, dessert, and a few more bites along the way.

Allan’s favorite was the Korean Aguachile, and mine was the Chilled Acorn Noodles. Between the food and the overall experience, @themulberryla is your next casual LA hangout🥂

The best things I ate and sipped, with highlights in this week’s review and column:

The chef’s special chirashi box @tigersdenla . More on my new favorite takeout sushi place in Ktown in the column (link in bio 👀).

The jamon y queso arepa from @chainsaw.la . (Full review link in bio 👀).

The passionfruit lime icebox pie from @chainsaw.la .

The @chainsaw.la empanada.

Soy marinated blue prawns @themulberryla

Strawberry bingsu @themulberryla

Red snapper with hazelnut pepita dukkah and lemon torshi from @rumiskitchenofficial

Duck fesenjoon from @rumiskitchenofficial

Ending with highlights from an incredible homemade meal from @mvgcooks : Corn chawanmushi with roasted corn, shiso and popped sorghum.

Striped bass with a Champagne mustard shallot sauce and roasted cabbage brushed with brown butter topped with pickled mustard seeds and crunchy buckwheat groats by @mvgcooks

Dueling rice krispies treats for dessert. @mvgcooks made excellent Scotcheroos with miso, while @aimee_beth_ made @ericjoonho ‘s stellar black sesame rice krispies treats. Who won? Me, eating both of them!

Sawtelle has a new king 👑

@themulberryla lived up to all the hype. Easily the best meal I’ve had on Sawtelle Blvd, and if you know me, that’s saying a lot.

The lineup:
kimchi pancakes
spicy tofu soup
steak tartare in a stone pot (standout✨)
beef shortrib (standout✨)
hotteok à la mode
strawberry bingsu

Not my best camera work (I was busy eating😬) But what I lacked in photography skills the food made up for in flavor. Shoutout my boy @philip_wolf9 for feasting with me 🤝

Best things I ate recently while trying to survive being a person with a calendar:

@suraoxnard jajangmyeon, mandu soup, and grilled pork belly with fermented kimchi. A very effective way to make me stop checking my email.

The lamb dumplings at @mahjongdumplings . I thought about the next order before I finished the first.

@montescalifornia Korean fried chicken sandwich at lunch. Crispy, messy, and worth looking slightly undignified in Montecito.

Everything at @themulberryla . I refuse to narrow it down.

The Ojai Pixie spritz and melon salad at @frontside_cafe . Proof that a salad can, occasionally, be the thing I keep talking about.

@thelarksb brunch menu, which made getting out of bed feel like a sound decision.

And an espresso martini at @cutlers_distillery , because apparently my survival plan includes caffeine with a plot twist.

Also, put literally anything from @sombracoffeelounge in my hand. I will happily drink it.

HELLO EVERYONE I AM SO PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE I have a new favorite restaurant in LA. The Mulberry is so good. Vibe is immediately cozy and cool. Staff was so fun and nice. Food??? EXCELLENT. I didn’t get pictures of everything because we ate too fast. Must get the kimchi pancake, the wings, chilled acorn noodle, short rib, kimchi, and the star: steak tartare in a stone pot. The rice gets crispy, it is heaven. The cocktails were also amazing. We got this strawberry shaved ice dessert situation and it was perfect for me. My ideal dessert. Genuinely 10/10, I need to go back immediately.
