Dr. Komal Raul
Deputy Director, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan & Zoo, Mumbai
The 4th Vandurga: The True Spirit of Our Creative Journey

Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan & Zoo (Byculla Zoo) is where Vanyavani was born.
To this day, every new play we create begins its journey right here with its official Muhurt and its first Mumbai show. The very first round of applause for all our wildlife plays always echoes from this beloved ground.
Representing the Zoo’s dedicated team, Dr. Komal Raul Ma’am has been the biggest champion of all our dreams and ventures. She has stood by us at every step—from the first draft of a script to the sacred Muhurt, and from backstage jitters to the final standing ovation.
When we dreamed of bringing the Vanyavani Wildlife Festival to life, she played a vital role in turning that dream into reality. At almost every show, you will find her right there in the front row—cheering our artists, feeling every emotion, and applauding with all her heart.
Always standing by our side, she is the true spirit of Vanyavani.

Somewhere between who I was and who I am,
I stopped trying to explain everything.

Two photographers. Two countries. One love for nature. 🇮🇳🤝🇻🇳🐦

A fun birding adventure in Mumbai with my friend from Vietnam! 📸🌿

From forgetting my helmet 😂💀 to exploring Bhandup Pumping Station and searching for birds, every moment became part of the story.

Different backgrounds, new connections, and memories captured through our lenses. 🌍✨

And this is just the beginning! More adventures coming soon. 🐦🎬

📰 When the wild finds its way into the headlines!🐢🌊

Proud to see Sangeet Kurmaakhyan featured in a Mid-Day — bringing the story of sea turtles, marine conservation and our relationship with the ocean into the spotlight.

Written and directed by Makarand Bhaskar Sawant, Sangeet Kurmaakhyan takes wildlife conservation beyond conventional narratives and onto the Marathi theatre stage, blending the power of folk arts with a compelling message for our blue planet.

🎭 Written & Directed by Makarand Bhaskar Sawant
🌿 Produced by Vanyavani Foundation
🌊 Presented by Mangroves Cell, South Konkan Division
✨ Mumbai Premier organised by Mangrove Foundation

For us, this is more than a news feature. It is another step towards making wildlife a part of our cultural conversations and conservation a shared responsibility.
From the forest to the coast, the stories of the wild deserve a stage.

This is what happens when you live next to Mumbai Zoo… 🦓🤣

The kids found the markers this morning and decided to turn themselves into animals. 🐒🖍️

Just another peaceful Saturday morning with our Finnish kids in India. 😂🇫🇮🇮🇳

Hey @themumbaizoo , do these two qualify for an annual family pass? 🤣

This Wildlife Week at Vanyavani Wildlife Festival ,I chose to draw a pangolin — a shy and beautiful animal that many people have never even heard of.

Did you know that the Indian pangolin is an endangered species and one of the most heavily trafficked wild mammals in India? It is hunted for its scales and meat, even though it plays an important role in nature by feeding on ants and termites.

A pangolin curls into a ball when it feels threatened. But who will protect it from humans? 💔

I am happy to have received a consolation prize in the drawing competition organised by Mumbai Zoo during Wildlife Week celebrations. Thank you, Mumbai Zoo, for giving children like me an opportunity to express our love for wildlife through art.

A special thank you to Paresh Dada Churi, my first drawing teacher, who held my pencil when I was just five years old, and to my mother, who continues to inspire me to learn about and care for nature. ❤️

For me, this drawing is not just about a prize. I hope it helps more people discover the pangolin and understand why it needs our protection.

I may be too young to stop wildlife trafficking on my own, but I can start by spreading awareness.

Let us protect pangolins, stop wildlife trafficking and give these wonderful animals a chance to survive. 🌿
