Seattle Art Fair is on all this weekend at the Lumen Field Event Center. It’s such a pleasure to visit the @thencebydescent booth (A17) to see how Mark Tan has combined original Nakashima furniture, @erik_sven_photography , a Calder textile wall hanging, various art objects, and three of our borrowed bonsai in a creative, inviting, warm arrangement. Don’t you want to go to the party at this place? Stop by if you can!

When two art forms rooted in the same philosophy come together—revering trees, patience, living materials, and natural character—something profound emerges.

Recently, Mark Tan of @thencebydescent brought authentic Nakashima furniture to @pacificbonsaimuseum to be photographed by @erik_sven_photography. Hear Mark discuss Nakashima’s philosophy, show a few design details that make these pieces so special, and explain why passing treasured pieces down through generations is the ultimate sustainable approach to living with objects.

A deeper connection: George Nakashima learned traditional Japanese carpentry from Kenny Hikogawa (who later co-founded Oriental Garden Center here in Federal Way) when they were imprisoned together at Minidoka during WWII. One of the Oriental Garden Center bonsai now stands in our collection—a living link between teacher, student, and the craft they honored.

More to come on this project!
