They Called Us Exceptional: And Other Lies That Raised Us by Prachi Gupta.

A very challenging book to read for me, as Gupta unveils layers and layers of toxicity from the model minority myth that breaks down her family.

The book is written as a letter to her (estranged) mother, detailing Gupta’s evolution of relationships with each member of the immediate and extended family. At the core of it is her reckoning with the most dominant character of the book (and her life), her volatile father. As she comes of age though, as in many families’ stories, villains and victims get blurred. In a family, each can help and hurt another deeply.

There’s so much hurt in this book. And some aspects of it comes close to home for me, which makes it even harder to face. Volatile tempers, and the psychology that it creates within a family, are familiar to me, as well as the cultural need to be seen as ‘exceptional’ from the outside by burying anything negative inside.

Many themes intersect in Gupta’s life, the most stark being the views that the men in the family hold about women. One of the key development in the story is that of her brother, a bright star in the beginning of the book, but gradually changing for the worse. It gives me, as a mom of boys, a lot of food for thought on how this progression could happen.

Special thanks to @thenonfictional for highlighting this book. I picked this up from her reading list! Check out the review on @thenonfictional‘s page too.
