“But I am not crying in panic or fear or even sadness. Just a few loose tears. I think I am crying because the stream of words, uttered in the soft, undulating voice of my kid, have lifted me out of chaos and into something else, something with a shape, something mappable even if it’s still unknown, something like the constellation of our new books in the back seat, and all the postcards she writes and doesn’t send, and the archipelago of sharp rocks and black caves where poor Polyphemus lived, and all the tiny stones that make up the mosaic of Proteus, and all the mornings I feel I will fuck up endlessly as a mother but don’t, or not really, or not that much.”

SUN IN LEO

Fixed Fire. Valeria Luiselli radiates the joy of pure self-expression. A supremely confident artist, she shines a hard and unrepentant light on everything she touches. This book acts like a fire around which we gather, a nourishing fire, a safe fire in the vaster wilds. She’s the quiet lioness.

MOON IN SAGITTARIUS

Mutable Fire. Valeria Luiselli thrives in her vulnerability, she swims in the deep-end armed with nothing but her formidable need to understand, to unearth, to excavate, to relate, to associate, to decode the world as it was, as it is and as it could be. She’s an electric current in the water. She’s the catalyst. She’s the octopus, master feeler and owner of three hearts.

MERCURY IN VIRGO

Mutable Earth. Valeria Luiselli slashes her days with a scalpel, she dissects, she edits, she can dissolve into self-analysis but always in the search for clarity, for understanding, for a precise meaning whose smell she has located but has not quite found in the world. She’s the seeker. She’s the tombarola. She’s the deer, gazing piercingly through the foliage.

JUPITER IN SAGITTARIUS

Mutable Fire. Valeria Luiselli is the travelling bard, the hunter-gatherer, who sings and cries in equal measure. She’s the wide-eyed foreigner who teaches the locals. She’s the molten state between the grittiness of sand and the purity of glass. She’s the Centauride, half-woman, half-horse, on a quest for more wisdom.

She’s the ever-shifting, Protean middle.

~ 30 books on mothers, mothering, and motherhood ~

Motherhood is one of my favorite themes to read and reflect on in books, and so, with Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, I’ve put together a collection of 30 books — mostly novels, as well as some memoirs — featuring motherhood as a central theme. These picks include some of my all-time favorite books, as well as several new & recent releases on my tbr.

You may want to check trigger warnings for these recommendations, as many contain heavier themes and plot points; and/or center grief after miscarriage, loss of a child, or losing one’s own mother. Some also center infertility.

If you are weathering a season of pain related to any such loss or longing, I am sending you love.💙
