Inside Issue 12: A Ceramic Declaration

Katie Rose Johnston, the maker behind Studio Manifesto @m_a_n_i_f_e_s_t_o was born in Shetland and lived there until she was six. In those early years the distinct, beautifully harsh environment seeped into her core, setting the foundations of who she was to become and perhaps moulding the pieces she would come to make, long before her first encounter with clay. The distinct treeless landscape, complex geology, ancient settlements and Norse heritage of Shetland are where her hands first touched the earth and remains significant to this day. She describes her pride at being “a Shetlander” and the feeling that “everything just made so much sense” when she returned after an 18-year wait following her relocation with her family to Dunblane and then Aberdeenshire.

Truth be told this year began with me feeling very depressed and then it panned into something very different.

I’d spent two years in a job that had brought so much good to my life but I knew it was time to move on, or I’d be staying stagnant.

I knew I needed to make a change but leaving the safety of it all sent me into full panic stations and brought up all sorts of fears that I wasn’t good enough.

But I did it anyway and for that I’m so glad 😂

What progressed was then 3 months of doing 3 jobs at once while I worked out my notice (lol that was a lot) and then suddenly stepping into the life I’d worked to make happen (a patchworky world of music, art and socials)

My brain has felt so full so many times this year, but I look back and I’m so proud.

It marks the first year I’ve met fans of my music in real life (something that makes me cry lol)

It also marks moments of working with people whose music I have listened to for years - creating two songs with @gracegardnermusic and opening for my hero @gracebaldridge

It’s also held many moments spent coming back to my body in cold water and feeling endlessly grateful to have found people that help me see a bright and beautiful future for myself.

I have really loved this year and that’s not always something I’ve been able to say 😂

Thanks for being along for the ride ❤️
