My third autumn, now, living here. The first tinged in grief and the second being in that liminal space just before Brodie’s arrival.

This autumn, perhaps finally starting to find some semblance of structure in motherhood. Never have I in my life been so home, still, slow for so long. I think sometimes I still get a fleeting feeling of itchy feet but before I can grab onto it, life is just happening too much.

It’s rained and rained and the waterfalls have formed on the mountains. I can hear the stags roaring nearby. A cold wind now cuts through the warmth of the sun. I actually love it. All my life a summer person but I don’t think that’s true anymore. I like this turning of the season, the golds, browns, the cracking of the leaves. Saying goodbye to midgies and ticks. Bundling a baby up in a puffy coat and shoes as he walks the beach, slipping on seaweed. The light shines through the windows, lower, softer. Up before the sun, the sun to bed before us.

I swam every day I was on Papa Westray and locals (human) who often swim here said there would be a chance the seals would join. Little did I know I'd see them everyday (at a distance!!) and unlike the locals (human) I was not brave enough to swim beyond right next to the old pier as I wanted quick exit routes in case the seals got close. Always give wildlife lots of space no matter how tempting!! 🦭🌀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 @visitorkney @visitscotland #papawestray #wildswimming #coldwaterswimming #seals

Still thinking about home

My parents spent almost the whole summer visiting and now that they've gone back I'm feeling more homesick than usual. Forever a blessing and curse having my heart spread so far apart.
