Seychelles is taking a major step towards better understanding and managing its vast maritime domain. 🌊

With a 1.4 million km² EEZ, the new Seychelles Hydrographic Office will help build the marine knowledge needed for navigation, safety, planning, environmental management and the wider Blue Economy.

But mapping the ocean is a huge task: a 2024 survey covered around 650 km² - less than 0.05% of the country’s maritime domain.

Moments like this I feel when Talanoa reaches the sublime. When it feels like being connected from one shoreline of the globe to another. Sharing laughs, story, and advocacy with Captain Adams from the Seychelles 🇸🇨 , I saw someone who carries the humanity of ocean in his work and in spirit.

“The sea does not wait for us to be ready,” he shares. “It demands that we act—with care, with urgency, with respect.”

Steady words from a sea captain! 🫡

I’ll stop here but you get my ‘swell’ right? Checkout our full Talanoa on a JET news podcast with jay-j (yours truly), the traveling diplomat. React, comment and share what you think about this work.

𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥 – 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐚

By Kassey Govinden

Out of the four individuals reported missing from the sunken vessel Galatea, one Swiss national has been rescued and is currently being transported to Mahe Island for further medical evaluations and questioning.

This brings the total number of people rescued to 10. Two other Swiss nationals and a Seychellois are unaccounted for.

The individual who was rescued on Friday afternoon is reported to be in stable condition, despite experiencing sun exposure, elevated blood pressure, and mild hypothermia since the rescue.

Among the people rescued earlier yesterday, nine were on board a dinghy that reached Des roches Island.

Updates of the incident and rescue efforts were given during a press conference held this afternoon by the Ministry for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation, the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA), Islands Development Company (IDC), Seychelles Defence Force (SDF), and the National Information Sharing Coordination Centre.
According to the latest information, seven people are back on Mahe, where they are receiving medical care.

"Despite still being in shock, the rescued individuals are in stable health. However, as a precautionary measure, it is essential to conduct the necessary medical evaluations to ensure their well-being before proceeding with the required questioning," said Christian Lionnet, Deputy chief executive of IDC.

For his part, Acting Commissioner of Police, Godfra Hermitte said the investigation and questioning are still continuing.

"The captain of the vessel remains in police custody. We await the arrival of three other rescued individuals who are scheduled to arrive on Mahe tonight, at which point we will take the necessary steps to continue our investigation," he remarked.
Galatea sunk in the early hours of Friday, while on a cruise off Marie-Louise Island.

Part 1 | SMSP Management Committee Visit🇸🇨🌊
📍Farquhar Atoll

Earlier this month, as part of ongoing efforts under the Seychelles Marine Spatial Plan 🗺️🌍, members of the Management Committee undertook a multi-agency site visit to the Farquhar Archipelago Marine Sustainable Use Area.

The mission provided an opportunity to visit newly formed islands such as Bancs de Sable 🏝️, to observe the Important Bird Area (IBA) of Île aux Goélettes 🪶, and to gain deeper insight into the history, evolution and current operations of the atoll.

Discussions focused on the realities of managing a remote atoll — connecting policy with practice and understanding how logistics, conservation priorities and sustainable use intersect in daily operations. 🌊

Conversations throughout the visit also touched on key ecological processes — including fish spawning aggregations 🐟 — and the interconnected marine and terrestrial habitats that make Farquhar so ecologically significant.🌊🌿

Engaging directly in the field strengthens informed decision-making and reinforces our collective commitment to the long-term stewardship of Seychelles’ outer islands. 🌱

Another day, another rescue at sea...

Our heroic marine team have been at it again, this time coming to the rescue of a distressed Tropical Shearwater, spotted near St. Anne.

They immediately diverted course and rescued the exhausted seabird from drowning.

The story had a happy ending - after sunning his feathers on the deck for a little while, he flew off - ready to fish another day 💙

A big thank you to our amazing crew for acting quickly to ensure a happy outcome 👏

REAL LIFE RESCUE: Yesterday, while on tour to Praslin & La Digue, our crew on Le Cerf helped rescue a boat in distress.

The boat was spotted by one of our clients, who pointed it out to our guide, Lucine.

Lucine alerted the crew and they rushed to its assistance and were able to offer immediate aid to a young man, who had been floating at sea for two days!!

His outboard motor had fallen off, and no passing vessels had stopped to help him.

The @masonstravel crew brought him safely on board, and helped to tow his boat back to shore.

We are incredibly proud of Lucine and our team, who demonstrated their commitment to maritime safety and their care for the community 👏

Well done!! 👏
