Although this pet appears to be doing relatively well considering the severity of the abnormality, Dr. Jackson is concerned about the pet’s comfort and overall quality of life. At this time, we are unsure what caused this condition. Additional diagnostics would be required to learn more about the abnormality, determine the underlying cause, and better understand what treatment options may be available.

Due to the owner’s limited resources, we are asking our community to help us raise funds through The Soft Paws Animal Clinic Foundation to assist with this pet’s medical care and additional diagnostic testing.

Our goal is to get this pet some relief while gathering the information needed to determine the best path forward for their comfort and quality of life.

Dr. Jackson and the Soft Paws Team welcome Dr. To Be Angelo!

Angelo is a veterinary student at LSU who will be spending the next couple of weeks alongside Dr. Jackson, gaining hands-on experience and learning as much as he can about veterinary medicine and the day-to-day responsibilities of being a veterinarian.

Today, Dr. To Be Angelo joined Dr. Jackson in examining Miley after her owner expressed concerns about possible Cushing’s disease.

Cushing’s disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, occurs when the body is exposed to excessive levels of cortisol. Common signs in dogs can include increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, panting, a pot-bellied appearance, thinning hair, and changes to the skin. Diagnosis typically requires a combination of examination findings, laboratory testing, and specialized diagnostic testing.

Cases like Miley’s provide veterinary students with valuable opportunities to connect what they learn in the classroom with real patients.
