POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

And we need to center care in a way that has never been done before. Black men urgently need us. We have to handle them with the care that this world simply refuses to grant them. Racism, discrimination, police brutality, adultification bias, toxic masculinity, homophobia, depression, anxiety, and the inability to be just BE is killing our men. They need the freedom to cry, ask for help, be vulnerable, and to be loved unconditionally.
Of course, we all need those things, but they need it more, now. The space just does not exist. Everyone I know who has a Black son had to equip their child with a certain set of tools. A toolkit armed with fear, poisoned by white supremacy, telling them how to shrink themselves, not cause trouble, to avoid being literally killed when they go out in public just because they are who they are. Racism defies logic. It is cruel, it is wrong, it’s dehumanizing, and we can’t live in a world like this anymore. It’s not working.
Regardless, we have to start somewhere. - @theonlymelly (full article on BlackWithNoChaser.com )

BET ON YOURSELF, like Fred (Van Vleet) - after OD'ing on Kanye West x Drink Champs interviews, both parts one & two (a must watch for high performing entrepreneurs & creatives imo), the culture of betting on oneself in Canada doesn't quite exist in the same way that it does in the United States, where the ownership stakes and revenue generation bar is considerably higher, especially for IBPOC entrepreneurs. Check out our Black Tea podcast interview with popular media practitioner and entrepreneur Brandon Gonez who launched out on his own, leaving his job at Toronto news network CP24, to create Gonez Media, that features the popular Brandon Gonez Show on YouTube. After watching his unique take on news, politics, entertainment & social issues, traditional media might feel extremely dull & uninteresting to you. Also, ownership is key, across sectors, though many continue to delude themselves (or remain in denial?)

Check out our Black Tea podcast and interview with Brandon, wherever you consume your podcasts (P.S. you can find us on Spotify, Apple).

On our Black Tea podcast, we interviewed Dr. Rinaldo Walcott, Professor of Black Diaspora Cultural Studies at the Women & Gender Studies Institute, at the University of Toronto. His teaching and research is in the area of black diaspora cultural studies so we got into it on a whole host of issues tied to Black identity, culture, histories and futures in Canada. I grew up consuming the works of many African American public intellectuals like Tricia Rose, Cornel West, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Michael Eric Dyson, and had interviewed Rinaldo years ago for a BHM cover story I had written for Now Magazine because he was and still remains one of the more well respected Black Canadian public intellectuals, academics (or what we call Blackademics 👀). Rinaldo is also an accomplished Canadian writer, having authored a number of worthwhile tomes, including Black Like Who: Writing Black Canada (1997) all the way to a few books he published this year; The Long Emancipation: Moving toward Black Freedom (Duke University Press) and On Property (Biblioasis)
