What happens when you get back from digging in the crates? Switch on the Akai MPC60, and get to work! This footage was shot by Tom Rae in 1999. Curt Cazal, QBall and Darren Laws were chilling in the lounge in Chorlton, while I got busy with the help of Henry Smithson aka Riton ( who went on to achieve great things!). What this video shows is a part of the process of making tracks with samples in that era. A lot of it feels and sounds like chaos, until something happens. In this clip the fast beat, with the chopped up bass, didn’t come to anything. During the process of trying to build it up, you can see the discovery of the sample of The Association « The Time It Is Today » This track was sampled a good year later and looped to make the main body of « Bamburgh Dunes » which can be found on the solo album, Rae Road. The sample was cleared with the help of my lawyer Rudi Kidd, who was a great help through those years. Music, DJing and creative chaos, always believe that something good is going to happen! Just two out of many.
Let's keep playing records that were made to be in the first place.
