How far are you prepared to go to overcome your fears?

After going through bowel cancer in 2021, I made a promise to myself: to live with gratitude and follow my dreams. And I am.

What I’ve learnt along the way is that most of us have something holding us back, whether we’re conscious of it or not.

For me, one of the biggest barriers has been the fear of what other people think.

So I’ve started intentionally doing things that push me beyond my comfort zone. Not for attention, but to remind myself that fear is often perceived rather than real.

The truth is, most people are far more focused on their own lives than they are on judging ours.

I was inspired by @theperceptioncoach who lay down in a busy train station for 30 seconds to challenge his fear of being judged. I knew I wanted to try it too.

The only problem? I wasn’t sure when I’d next be passing through a station busy enough to do it.

Then, while travelling through Stockholm Central Station, I caught myself thinking, “Why not now?”

So I did it.

And instead of feeling embarrassed, I felt brave. Mostly, apart from the bit at the end where my face is a hint of tomato 🍅

It felt good to prove to myself that I can be bold, take action before fear talks me out of it and stop worrying so much about what other people think.

Thirty seconds of discomfort. A powerful reminder that freedom often lives just beyond what feels comfortable.

What’s one thing you’ve done, or would like to do, to push past your fears?

When you’re learning to be less appeasing, more boundaried, and more direct, it can be a mix of feeling empowered AND embroiled with guilt.

You might feel sick. It might replay in your head at 2am.

Jon Prince is a coach, author and former pro poker player.

I ask Jon how poker trained him to hold his nerve in situations where his inner critic was melting down, and he had to stay steady.

We get forensic about all the steps he took. And we dive into some real life situations on how to apply those learnings day to day.

He talks about James Bond’s non-reactivity in a way I never appreciated before.

How can you grow YOUR capacity for tension and non-reactivity?

If you’re aspiring to speak your mind more, or to be willing to disappoint others (to finally quit disappointing yourself) this conversation needs to be in your headphones.
