Sleep problems after TBI may be more than just another symptom. They may become part of a vicious cycle.

TBI can disrupt sleep and impair the brain’s glymphatic system, which helps clear cellular waste. Poor sleep may further reduce this clearance, potentially contributing to persistent symptoms that can then make sleep even harder.

The result: TBI disrupts sleep → poor sleep may interfere with recovery → persistent symptoms further disrupt sleep.

The human evidence behind the glymphatic mechanism is still developing, but sleep deserves serious attention after brain injury.
