Still reminiscing last week’s “Tuesdays at Six” concert with @thepolyphonists ✨

Their November 18 program brought together the purity of Renaissance polyphony, the expressive depth of Romantic writing, and the compelling colors of Milhaud’s Cantique du Rhône. Hearing these four voices move so seamlessly through centuries of music was truly special.

If you couldn’t be there, here’s a moment from the performance we were lucky enough to experience in person. Thank you to everyone who arrived for the welcome reception and concert and helped create such a warm, intimate atmosphere. Nights like this remind us why live chamber music matters. 💛🎶

The Polyphonists (puh-LIH-fuh-nists) are a professional vocal ensemble founded from two households: soprano Amy Broadbent & tenor Matthew Hill, and mezzo-soprano Sylvia Leith & bass-baritone Edmund Milly. The word polyphony describes many independent voices interwoven in harmony, and that is their ethos: four soloists who come together to create music that transcends their individuality.

Since their 2020 debut, The Polyphonists have developed a reputation for sophisticated and broad-ranging programming, with a commitment to expanding the choral canon by premiering new works and shining a light on lesser-known gems of the repertoire. The Polyphonists made their Lincoln Center debut in 2024 as the solo quartet in Richard Einhorn’s acclaimed concert piece Voices of Light. They also performed as the solo quartet in the D.C.-area premiere of Fanny Hensel’s Oratorium nach Bildern der Bibel. The Polyphonists have been featured in residence at the University of Maryland, Towson University, the University of Oklahoma, & Oklahoma Baptist University, and received an Honorable Mention for the American Prize in Chamber Music Performance, 2023 (Professional Division). Founding members Amy Broadbent, Sylvia Leith, Matthew Hill, and Edmund Milly are highly regarded as solo artists and have performed a wide variety of operatic and oratorio roles with top orchestras, opera companies, and choral ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, and American Bach Soloists.

The New York Choral Society for Voices of Light / The Passion of Joan of Arc, presents a stunning fusion of live music and cinema. Richard Einhorn’s dramatic score accompanies the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), featuring Renée Falconetti’s iconic portrayal of Joan. Originally censored by the Catholic Church, this visually striking film has been newly restored and will be projected on a grand scale at Alice Tully Hall. Led by Music Director, David Hayes, and presented with the Mannes Orchestra and The Polyphonists, this event showcases the New York Choral Society’s bold artistic mission. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening for film and music lovers alike.

What a fantastic night!!! A powerful and moving performance of Richard Einhorn’s ‘Voices of Light’ by the New York Choral Society, Mannes Orchestra, The Polyphonists and the Parthenia Viol Consort! So proud to have led these wonderful musicians who all gave an incredibly passionate performance. Thrilled that composer Richard Einhorn was with us last night! And that film!! You must experience Carl Dreyer’s 1928 ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ - it’s beyond fantastic!! @newyorkchoralsociety @thepolyphonists @partheniaviolconsort @newschoolperformingarts

We’re thrilled to welcome new chorus member Dara Fineman (@hebrewhamlincoln) to the New York Choral Society! Dara recently shared her passion for our upcoming Voices of Light performance on social media and how this powerful pairing with the film The Passion of Joan of Arc resonates with her on a deeply personal level. We’re grateful to have her voice and heart in our chorus!

"So in film school I wrote a report about my favorite film and it was The Passion of Joan of Arc. The emphasis of the close up. The use of symbolic imagery. The triumph of the human spirit. The original cut was thought to be lost to time but was rediscovered in 1983 and new compositions were created to accompany the silent film.

In a truly full circle moment, I recently auditioned for and joined the @newyorkchoralsociety and my first ever performance with them will be my favorite of the compositions sung with an orchestra, soloists and with the live screening of the film.

Tickets are available now if you read all of this and are interested in an amazing immersive art experience in NYC and an important artistic moment for me on a very personal level."
