The Raptor Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Millington, New Jersey, dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of wild birds.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

115 birds, 1 morning.

Last night, more than 1.6 MILLION birds crossed over Hudson County, and we knew to expect a harrowing morning in Jersey City. Our volunteers showed up in force, with 11 of us trekking around the city to document strikes and capture injured birds.

In a single morning, we were able to capture and transport 50 birds to @theraptortrust for rehabilitation. Another 15 were injured but flew away before they could be captured, and 50 were found dead.

Mornings like this are hard. Every bird found is an individual life, and finding so many dead or injured birds takes a toll on the people searching for them. We’re grateful to every volunteer who searched, documented, captured, and helped transport birds today, and to The Raptor Trust for providing care.

Among the 115 birds found, we identified 20 species:
White-throated Sparrow - 44
Swamp Sparrow - 21
Hermit Thrush - 12
Song Sparrow - 9
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 3
Blackpoll Warbler - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Brown Creeper - 2
Pigeon - 2
Eastern Towhee - 1
Magnolia Warbler - 1
Northern Parula - 1
Palm Warbler - 1
Dark-eyed Junco - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Ovenbird - 1
Tennessee Warbler - 1
Common Yellowthroat - 1
Winter Wren - 1
House Wren - 1

Fifty birds got a chance at care today because volunteers showed up for them. Your support helps us keep showing up and working to prevent these collisions in the first place.

Please donate through our IG fundraiser or our website to support collision monitoring and our work to make Jersey City safer for birds. Interested in joining us? We’ll be recruiting monitoring volunteers again next spring.

Another Story Behind the Photo… Silent Strength 🦅

This Broad-winged Hawk was photographed at The Raptor Trust in Millington, New Jersey, an incredible place dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured raptors and other birds. Visitors can walk the grounds for free and see resident bald eagles, owls, hawks, vultures, and even a peregrine falcon.

I’ve never seen a Broad-winged Hawk in the wild, so I especially loved this encounter. Although the bird was behind a wire enclosure, my camera managed to focus right past the meshed enclosement, capturing every intricate feather—and my favorite detail, the magical twinkle in its eye.

That’s what I love about wildlife photography: sometimes, looking a little closer reveals something extraordinary.

Featured on page 11 of my coffee-table book, There’s This River, this portrait celebrates the quiet power and beauty of a bird of prey, inviting us to pause and appreciate the remarkable wildlife around us.

Beautifully Printed. Inspired by Nature.

Wildlife. Wonder. Close to home.

Big update! We just learned that the baby bird we rescued a few weeks ago, has been rehabilitated and released! After his fall from his nest, our team rushed into action and got our boy Blue to the right people! Their quick thinking, and the bird rescues care saved a life! Thank you to @theraptortrust for saving him! #eastbrunswick #njpediatricdentist #pediatricdentistry #ebpd

🦅 Thank You, Raptor Trust! 🦉
A huge thank-you to Charlotte from The Raptor Trust for visiting our store and giving us such an informative and interesting program! She told us all about The Raptor Trust and the amazing work they do, and taught us how to recognize when a bird may be sick or injured and what we can do to help. 🐦💚
Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us — we hope you learned as much as we did!
And of course, thank you for your roll of paper towels! 😂🧻 Every good birding event needs a little something extra!
We’re so grateful for the opportunity to learn more about helping our feathered friends. 💚

What makes State Line Lookout in Alpine, New Jersey such an important place for birding? 🦅

The overlook sits high along the Palisades, giving birders an incredible vantage point for watching migrating birds move along the Hudson River and surrounding ridgelines. The Hawkwatch is a place where observers watch, identify, and document migrating raptors such as hawks, falcons and eagles.

In fall, these birds use thermals, wind currents, and updrafts to conserve energy as they travel south. That makes locations like State Line Lookout important not only for birders, but for understanding migration patterns and the movements of these incredible birds.

This is migration in action, right here in northern New Jersey.

BALD EAGLE: Just for funsies. Full Disclosure: This is a captive bird named Uno, rescued in the late eighties in Sitka, AK and -- with only one good eye -- deemed unable to survive in the wild. She has been a permanent resident of The Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ for about 37 years... 🦅😁

A #galapagos #hawk keeps a keen eye out for prey from a perch on Fernandina Island. This is one of the only natural predators found in the #galapagosislands and will prey on almost anything from insects all the way up to sea lion pups and even young invasive goats. They are large #hawks being the second largest species in the Americas (only the Ferruginous hawk exceeds them). This individual looks a little unkempt as it was pretty windy and its feathers were being ruffled by the breeze. There is no mistaking that intense stare of a bird who knows it’s an alpha predator. #canonusa

On Friday, September 4th, I was once again fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph a very special moment at the Mohonk Preserve — the release of four young female Peregrine Falcons. 🦅

These four Peregrines were successfully rehabilitated by The Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ. Each bird received medical evaluation, rehabilitation, and appropriate flight training to prepare them for their return to the wild.

The release was carried out by Chris Nadareski of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Watching these magnificent birds take their first flights back into the wild was an incredible experience. There is something especially powerful about seeing a bird that has gone through rehabilitation finally get the chance to spread its wings and return to where it belongs.

I’m grateful to Mohonk Preserve for allowing me to document this special event, and to everyone involved in giving these Peregrines a second chance at life in the wild.

Here’s to four young Peregrines beginning the next chapter of their journey. ❤️🦅
