POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A year.

That’s how long my father’s things sat at my front door.

Not because I didn’t care…
but because I cared too much to touch it without understanding what I was holding.

Yesterday, one of his best friends drove down from Maryland just to help me.

Uncle Derrick… respectfully.
Also known as: Cheat Code.

Because what felt like a year’s worth of emotional labor… he helped me move through in a few hours.

We went through cassette tapes, CDs, memory drives…
pieces of a life I didn’t fully have context for.

I wasn’t ready alone.

But I wasn’t meant to do it alone either.

And now…
I can open my front door and breathe.

Grief is not just crying.
Sometimes it’s the unopened boxes.
Sometimes it’s the pause before you’re ready.
Sometimes it’s the right person showing up at the right time to help you carry it.

I’m thankful.
For the help.
For the timing.
For the release.

🍤🦐 Argentine Red Shrimp and Crawfish Gumbo 🍲👨‍🍳
shrimp and crawfish gumbo over dirty rice:

Ingredients:

1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 lb. crawfish tails, peeled
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups seafood or chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes
2 bay leaves
2 tsp. Cajun seasoning
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Hot sauce, to taste
4 cups cooked white rice

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the flour and stir constantly until it turns a dark brown color, about 15-20 minutes.
Add the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the pot, and cook for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are softened.
Add the seafood or chicken broth, diced tomatoes, bay leaves, and Cajun seasoning to the pot, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
Add the shrimp and crawfish tails to the pot, and cook for 5-7 minutes, until the seafood is cooked through.
Season the gumbo with salt, black pepper, and hot sauce, to taste.
To serve, spoon some cooked white rice into a bowl, and ladle the gumbo over the top. Enjoy!
