• HIM: Hopeless in Men | album review •

Since its release two weeks ago, HIM has opened up the world of Ainjo. She effortlessly allows her listeners to dive deep into her vast history of where the root of the hopelessness birthed. She captures her audience with sultry yet a theatrical sense with the opening intro.

As each track weaves its self into each other. Ainjo’s melodic vocals complement her brilliant but relatable word play through her penmanship. Effortlessly she is able to draw everyday situations to rememberable lyrics for her listeners to catch onto to.

This body of work can be felt that she took her time curating every piece and placing it together to present it outwardly to the world. This album isn’t for quick fleeting minds. It’s for the ones who understand that you just don’t become hopeless overnight. The plot to the storyline was originated from true authenticity which now is shared with us the listeners.

As you listen, allow yourself to be taken on a journey of who Ainjo truly is and what she has to say. Enjoy!

There’s a difference between making an album about heartbreak and making an album that actually lets us hear all the ugly, confusing and sometimes hilarious stages of it, and Ainjo does exactly that on her debut album HIM (Hopeless In Men). 😭

Across 14 tracks, Ainjo takes us through desire, disappointment, bad decisions, mixed signals, self-reflection and those moments when you KNOW better but your feelings clearly did not get the memo. What really sold me on this project is her storytelling. It feels conversational, like your homegirl is giving you the entire rundown and you’re just sitting there listening like… girl, STAND UP. 😂

Vocally, Ainjo has this rich, soulful tone with jazz influences that immediately gives her music character. She knows when to pull back, when to lean into a lyric and when to let her backgrounds, harmonies and little vocal choices add to the emotion. The production complements that perfectly without taking away from the stories she’s telling.

“Tangerine,” “Weirdo,” “HMU,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Hopeless In Men,” “It’s Complicated,” “Breadcrumbs” and “Chapstick Rick” are some of my standouts, but what I really appreciate is how much PERSONALITY lives throughout this album.

HIM feels like Ainjo taking everything she’s learned from giving the wrong people access to her and turning it into something soulful, funny, vulnerable and extremely relatable.

Ainjo’s HIM deserves a listen. 🎧
