@rockstargames dropped “GRAND THEFT AUTO 3” 25 years ago today 🎮

Rockstar Games’ GTA 3 revolutionized open-world gaming, but its connection to Hip Hop culture deserves just as much recognition.

From the legendary Game Radio FM, hosted by Stretch Armstrong and Lord Sear, to Gang Starr’s Guru voicing 8-Ball, GTA III was packed with Hip Hop history.

The iconic GTA 3 soundtrack featured underground legends Royce Da 5’9”, Sean Price, Black Rob and Nature with production from The Alchemist, Red Spyda and Ayatollah. Even the instrumental to Eminem and Royce Da 5’9”’s “Scary Movies” made an appearance.

25 years later, Liberty City’s underground Hip Hop soundtrack remains one of the game’s most underrated features.

What was your favorite track from GTA III? And did you know that Gang Starr’s Guru voiced 8-Ball?

BLACK ROB — “WHOA!” (2000)

BAD BOY HAD A LOT OF STARS. BUT THIS ONE WAS ALL ROB. 💥

Before the world knew the hook, Black Rob had already put in years on the New York underground. Then came “Whoa!” — a record that turned his unmistakable voice, street-level storytelling, and larger-than-life delivery into one of the defining sounds of Bad Boy’s 2000 era.

Produced by Buckwild of the Diggin’ in the Crates Crew, the beat flips a sample from François Valéry’s “Joy,” turning an unexpected source into a hypnotic backdrop for Rob’s raw, conversational flow.

Released as the lead single from Life Story, “Whoa!” peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and broke into the Top 10 on the US R&B and rap charts. It became Black Rob’s biggest solo hit — proof that you didn’t need to outshine the whole room when your presence could command it.

Black Rob passed away in 2021, but that voice still hits like the first time. Rest in power, Rob. 🕊️
