Announcing this month's featured musician (yeah that's a thing we do now) EL MALO!

El Malo is a musical collective specializing in the sounds of Latin dance music blended with jazz, hiphop, funk, soul, and progressive rock influences. With fresh sounding tributes to classic Latin artists and energetic original material courtesy of a lineup featuring drum kit/Latin percussion, electric guitar, bass, vocals and horns, they bring the party to any event.

On El Malo's first (self titled) release, a low-fi Latin Jazz session recorded live in Brunswick, Maine; the Portland Phoenix published a complimentary review, calling the release, in part: "gritty and nasty in some interesting ways" and "As a whole, this album is a piece of genuinely different music-making with Latin and gypsy flavors you won't find often in Portland."

You can catch El Malo at BPM every First Friday of the month at 9pm. Pst... That's this Friday. Come party!

Happy El Malo Friday! Every First Friday we have Portland's one and only salsa-core band, El Malo, at BPM. If you're looking to move and groove to some latin inspired grooves tonight is your night! But if that's not your speed we have jazz saxophonist Tracy McMullen opening up the night with her group. Maybe they're both your speed to which we say, porque no los dos?
