ANYONE who is continuing on, as if this is a acceptable society to be part of, is part of the problem.

Dr Catherine Knight of Massey University lays out the hidden vulnerabilities in New Zealand’s food system and why national food abundance does not necessarily mean food security. Aotearoa produces more food than its population consumes, but that surplus masks critical weaknesses. New Zealand remains heavily dependent on imports for staples including wheat, rice, sugar, nuts and many legumes, with most wheat for human consumption imported from Australia. Climate change, geopolitical conflict and energy and material constraints could make these supply chains increasingly unreliable. Major crop failures are expected to become more frequent as warming increases, while conflict and trade disruption could further threaten food imports. But the vulnerability goes much deeper than imports. New Zealand’s industrial agricultural system depends heavily on imported diesel, fertiliser, farm machinery, spare parts and agricultural chemicals. Without these inputs, the capacity to produce, harvest, process, store and distribute food could deteriorate rapidly. Our highly centralised food system is also vulnerable to extreme weather and other disruptions. Two major supermarket chains control about 90% of food supply, while crops are concentrated in particular regions and distribution is concentrated around three main centres. A system optimised for efficiency can become dangerously fragile when disruption hits. At the same time, food insecurity already exists in a country with a national food surplus. One in five children regularly experience food insecurity. She argues New Zealand needs a national food strategy based on a comprehensive assessment of food security. This includes diversifying food production, increasing domestic production of staples, protecting productive soils, reducing food waste and building more resilient local food systems. The goal is not simply to produce more food. It is to build a food system that can keep functioning when climate shocks, energy constraints, geopolitical conflict and supply chain disruptions collide. “Food security is one sphere in which the solutions are both clear and entirely viable.”
