My beloved Globemaster. If I was ever to sell all my watches except one, this might we’ll be the one I’d keep…although to be brutally honest, decisions like this can change on an almost daily basis, as I sure any watch collector can appreciate?! 🤷‍♂️

What would be the one watch you’d keep?

Special watches deserve special straps. Who’s with me?

Since buying my beloved Breitling a few years ago I’ve been hunting for a suitably special strap for it. I’ve found straps that look ok, good even, but for one reason or another they’ve still not quite hit the mark. This hasn’t been made any easier by the fact my Breitling, like many vintage watches, has a very peculiar lug width - 18.5mm!

Don’t get me wrong, off-the-shelf 18mm straps don’t look terrible, but there is a small but noticeable gap between the strap and the lugs. The solution? To turn to the unsung heroes of the watch world…bespoke strap makers!

Based in the north of Scotland, Black Isle Leatherwork is an independent business owned and operated by John Keiller, a leathersmith who makes every watch strap entirely by hand using tried and tested traditional methods. He also uses only the finest quality leathers, something that was immediately obvious upon unwrapping my strap! It’s crafted using a mustard tan leather from the renowned Badalassi Carlo tannery and it feels, looks and smells fantastic. It’s substantial without being overly-thick and I love that the grain isn’t uniform, which brings character to complement the watch. It’s supple from the outset, but will patina and soften further on wearing. And that’s a big part of the appeal for me. Over time the strap will become at one with my wrist, conforming, picking up scars and darkening with the skin’s oils, effectively adding its own chapter to the watch’s considerable history.

With @black_isle_leatherwork you get a truly bespoke strap. You can specify the length of each piece, thread colour for the stitching, how many keepers you want, the leather type and just about anything else you can think of. And the result is worth it, especially if you’re after something for a specific watch rather than just because you want to add another strap for general use between watches.

I might be biased, but I think this is one of the nicest vintage chronographs ever! My Breitling Premier ref788 from 1945. I wear it sparingly as you should do with a watch this old, but it still sees regular action. Modern watches are much more practical, but you can’t fake patina and character that can only be gained over decades worth of wear. This watch must have seen some things in its time!

Timex Marlin Jet on new taupe cowhide leather strap from Wristbuddys. Remove the Timex badge and you wouldn’t guess this watch is well under the £300 mark. The NATO-style strap it came on isn’t actually too bad either, but it looks even better on some nice leather!

I’ve owned this North Flag since new and whilst recently it has been somewhat neglected, over the course of several years of ownership it’s been one of my most worn watches. Here it is photographed in natural daylight and in all its unedited glory, scratches and all!

Why do I love it so much? Well, it was Tudor’s first watch to house an in-house movement, and a great one at that. Its bold design really helped distance Tudor from Rolex (something I wish they’d do more today). I love the tool-like design and superb bracelet. I love the black ceramic bezel insert, the splashes of yellow and of course the power reserve indicator which is instantly recognisable. The crown operation and date tick-over is a beautiful thing. It’s also perfectly proportioned for MY wrist.

Oh, and it’s somewhat in my nature to go against the grain, not always, but often. When everyone else was scooping up Black Bays left right and centre (admittedly, myself included), I knew the North Flag satisfied the part of me that likes to be different. If watches are hyped beyond belief I usually head the other way. And the worst thing a salesperson can say to me is - that’s our most popular model! 🤣 🤷‍♂️

Like Omega’s Globemaster, to this day the NF is somewhat overlooked, even by die-hard Tudor fans. And that’s fine by me!

Which side of the fence do you sit on with the North Flag? Lover or hater?

We are launching a new Watch to our lineup!

Let us introduce you to the MERIDIAN, a watch with a clear message of who is in command.

Tradition obliges. This is also evident in watchmaking, where the features of classic models are brought back and subtly modernized.

The new Meridian continues the tradition of the field watch within the SPHAERA collection.

With a diameter of 38mm and a lug to lug of 45mm, it is suitable for every wrist and it is here to accompany you on your journey along the Meridians.

Orders will be officially available through our website on the 11th of October. Meet the MERIDIAN in person on the @torontotimepieceshow this weekend! Exclusive Pre Order available at our booth!
