$Along with The Sound of Music, Parasol was set to be released as a single from My Luminaries’ 2010 debut album. After a dramatic lineup change that left us unsure whether to continue (we soon didn’t), it never saw the light of day. It’s now on digital platforms with its originally intended artwork by Tom Fearn and two unheard remixes by fellow Berkshirians WORSHIP and MidiMidis (who are coincidentally back with a new album, and the world is a better place for that). Not long after graduation and moving out of the shared student digs aptly referred to as ‘The Ballbag’, I met and moved in with a fellow graduate and fine artist named Pete Middleton. He was another tall, handsome (ha!) blond and had a warm, welcoming personality and a heap of large-scale conceptual canvases to store. I was lucky. He opened up a world of politics and culture, giving shape and context to feelings I’d carried without the language for them. Pete and I would soon organise Reading’s Jail Guitar Doors day-festival, a fundraiser headlined by a young Laura Marling—perhaps an early indication of where Pete was headed. He’s since become an acclaimed filmmaker, his work carrying the same curiosity and conscience he brought to our Tolworth flat. His most recent film is Netflix’s Apollo 13: Survival. One evening, whilst alone in the kitchen, I played a new Pixies-esque instrumental demo from my bedroom speakers. It was loud enough that I could sing out without restraint and the physical, mindless action of washing up helped to subconsciously unlock the preacher-like verse melody and lyric “Get out of the rat race, and go back to your homes” and the ascending chorus line, which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - a very rare occurrence that cannot be dismissed… Instagram limits me to a fraction of this—the full piece, demo and more photos are over on my Substack - link in my bio.
