Meet Paula Coleman the owner of @paperdoll_artistry a Makeup Artist with 14 years experience. Paula has a Bachelors degree and is currently a student at Columbia South University working on a Masters Degree in Public Health. Her ultimate goal is to become a Family Practice Physician.

Paula who is originally from California moved to Georgia to make her dream of becoming a Doctor a reality.
Being a Latina in the south as well as being in a interracial marriage and raising a family there has it's own set of challenges. Here is her story:

"Growing up with parents like mine, you were either a field worker or a gang member. I grew up in foster homes and my parents were in and out of Prison. Experiencing this I didn't want this for my own kids so I decided to educate myself. I received an exceptance letter from Mercer University in Atlanta 2011 and my husband and I decided to move to Georgia to start a new life.
My husband is African American and I am Dominican & Filipino, we came to the South with our little boy. When we got here, there was some clear issues people had seeing an interracial family. It was always the look of judgement from many different people. Being from California I wasn't used to this. There was an instance where we were at a restaurant and the waitress refused to take my order or bring me a drink so my husband had to ask her to bring me something to drink...we just ended up walking out.

Latinas (in my opinion) in the South are mysteriously admired as if we are some mythical creatures but yet still treated like a third class citizen. Even if we have Degrees and speak properly it doesn't matter. Because I do not wear my resume on me, people see me and automatically stereotype or categorize me.
Racism is alive and well here in the South. My husband and I see or notice when people are being judgemental however they would never say anything directly to us.
We as Black and Brown people have to educate ourselves to get ahead in life we need more Lawyers, Doctors and Latinos in the White House. This is key to bring our people forward in life. We aren't just maids, housekeepers, gang members! We are so much more!
